#49214 Heroine's Quest Update

Posted by Fizzii on 26 December 2013 - 12:37 AM

Crystal Shard is proud to announce the release of Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok, available for FREE download!

hqposter.png

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, the game has excellent replayability.

Features:
- Explore the rich world of Norse mythology!
- Three character classes with separate side quests: use your strength as a warrior, the arcane arts as a sorceress, wit and guile as a rogue, or create a hybrid with skills from multiple classes.
- 32 distinct voice acted characters with animated portraits.
- Over 100 hand-painted backgrounds and 10,000 sprites in animations.
- Many monsters, including giants, trolls, and svartalfar.
- High replayability due to optional quests, alternative solutions, and the three different classes.

#49174 How very strange...

China had whole shops for Apple products that were fake.  Had the name Apple, everything but the logo - even the employees didn't know it was a scam.

#49133 Hero 6 Interest

Posted by torchinomotorino on 14 December 2013 - 07:54 AM

Greetings Gloryhounds!

I acquired the Hero6 source code about two years ago, just before the Cole's announced Hero-U (School for Heroes at the time).  It collected virtual dust until last week when I started inspecting the game code.  The game looks to be 80-90% complete with most of the artwork already rendered (my weak spot).  In my spare time, I've started finishing the game.  I'm not sure how long this will take, but I suppose the amount of time will be equivalent to my attention to detail.

I just thought I'd post something here in case someone had already taken steps toward finishing the game.  I'd love to hear back from anyone interested in assisting.  The dissolution of the Hero6 forums was a major resource loss, but the remaining information still available should be enough.

All contributions are welcome and appreciated!  If there's enough interest, I'll start posting progress updates.

Here is a quick run-through of the initial game play.  Follow the cursor to see what I'm pointing out.  Also, watch for the pink shadows of sprite-doom when I move diagonally - fun stuff!

Cheers!

#48997 Paladinlover turns 30!

Posted by Paladinlover on 28 October 2013 - 06:48 PM

Happy Birthday PL sweety :D *hug, kiss*

I'm really glad you have a good job and can make a good living for yourself. :)

Unfortunately I cannot say the same for myself, as I've been unemployed for almost 3 years now. Around 80 thousand Cypriots are without a job these days, and for that, Europe and our government is to blame. We have so many foreigners living and working here, and the last year or so, Greeks have been coming here and stealing the jobs of their "brothers" the Cypriots. And it came to the point that Cypriots have no choice but to leave their country and go abroad to find jobs and make a living for themselves.

And honestly, I'm thinking to do the same, cause things are completely hopeless right now. And they re bound to get worse...

I know how you feel, I've been watching the whole financial situation like a hawk, and what really scares me is how these bankers are using Cyprus as a test to see how the rest of the world will react once they apply the exact same thing to the rest of Europe, the US, and Canada. The whole world is slowing down and turning to crap in so many ways its just depressing. I'm honestly worried that Canada would be next on the list of countries to go down hard. It is still pretty bad over here with increasing unemployment rates. I mean Quebec has the second or is first even in unemployment in Canada. Currently, Canada has stronger regulation on the banks than some other countries, but even those won't stem the tides for too long. I have quite a bit of cash in my savings now, and I said, and even more with my dad in Lebanon (the money I saved up while I was in Dubai. I saved literally every penny I made and never spent any of it). I feel like any day now my savings might get sucked down the drain that is the financial crisis. I would say more about it, but it's a huge topic and I'm not sure if this is the right place to talk about it.

I really hope that things do get better for you. We've all been in the same position and when I heard the crisis popping up in Cyprus, you're the first person I thought of there. In some ways I don't spend much time trying to chase girls because my mind is on so many other things. I'm worried far more about the future than I ever was, and I was always the type of guy who cared about where the world was headed.

I shall omit my usual tag phrase for this post.

Yeppers, looked it up and since it was a brand new addition (for us, at least) it was defaulted to not having any allowed.  Set it to 5 possible likes per 24 hour period.

EDIT:  As for the uploading, I'm afraid that's up to Elsa there - she's the one who pays for the site, I'm just the lacky, and she's the one with the whip.

#48410 Running Quest for Glory games on Windows 7

Posted by Collector on 12 June 2013 - 02:49 AM

QUOTE (Orion @ Jun 11 2013, 06:26 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I've always thought the rule was 'You're allowed a backup copy' but no downloading said backup. For my QFG5 discs, I made a backup copy so I wouldn't have to worry about using the actual CD all the time.

Correct, but with limitations. However, backups have nothing to do with abandonware. Even the term "abandonware" has no legal meaning. Distribution of copyrighted material without prior permission is legally no different than piracy. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act has been used to issue takedowns for all sorts of things that most would consider gray areas. It was used to bring suit against eBay for sellers of legitimate copies of used copyrighted material. Fortunately, the Supreme Court shot that down, so you can sell or give away your legitimate copies of copyrighted games, movies, music, books, etc.

One thing to remember is that while some old games may appear to have no copyright holder, this is almost never that case. When a company goes under, somebody or some entity nearly always acquires the assets, which includes the IP. This is how Activision got the Sierra IP. It successively went from hand to hand until it fell into Activision's. From Sierra to CUC, which merged with HFS Incorporated to form Cendant. When the Cendant scandal broke and the heads of Cendant were indicted by a federal grand jury and sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Havas S.A. bought up the remains. Havas also bought Universal. They then created a business alliance between Vivendi, Seagram, and Canal+ to form Vivendi Universal. About this time Sierra had become nothing more than a label to slap on the boxes of games for brand recognition. When Vivendi bowed out, Sierra no longer existed, most (not all) the IP fell into Activision's hands.

I did not mean to go into the history lesson, but Sierra is a good example of the convoluted trail that the ownership of IP can undergo. Almost always, Somebody owns IP unless the owner releases it as freeware or makes it public domain.

GOG is most certainly legal. Part of their process to add a game to their catalog is to track down the current owner then negotiate for a license to distribute the game. The owner will receive a fee or royalties from GOG's sales. When I was working with them for the QfG collection, I offered a copy of the QfG5 soundtrack that came with the Collection series for distribution with the extras that often offer with a sale. I was told that they only had a license for the games themselves.
