Nanuaraq, try uploading your avatar again.  I did a bit of googling and found out that animated avatars are disabled by default with the new forums.  I found the setting that's supposed to enable things to animate properly throughout the forums and switched it on.  The only thing needed now is re-uploading the avatar.

If enabled, uploaded animated gifs will animate in the mini thumb on the board index and next to a post.

Profile page photos always animate. If you change this setting, it will only apply to future uploaded images.
