How many times do I have to explain this.... lol.gif

Well here goes again...

Check this guide we have at the main site here: http://www.questformoreglory.com/help/dosbox.html

You will find all the information you need about installing the games in Windows XP and getting them to run smile.gif

Thank you. smile.gif Sorry for the trouble...

And by the way, Elsa Von Spielburg, I like your icon and signature pictures. Very cool. smile.gif

Yep... I kinda glossed over the thread and only found out later, it contained just what I needed. jestera.gif

Edit: Actually, no wait... I already installed RedSun's patches before I started playing QFG4. :/ And, running from DosBox doesn't work!! ><;; The whole gamescreen becomes garbled whenever I try to restore or start a new game.

Installing and running the Dos version doesn't help much either. Ive fixed the sound issues but... it's very very horrible-sounding. o_O;; At some parts, the music practically splutters.

Edit again: nope, this is not the cause of too many cpu cycles. I think it's 'cos the audio is running in MIDI mode... ughhhh... time to give up, I think. x_X;;

Hey Yuri,

Just to clarify a couple of things:

The NewRisingSun QFG4 patches only work on the DOS version. Installing them will not help the Windows version - it only corrects issues with the DOS CD version of QFG4.

When you install the NewRisingSun patches, you must restart your game. You cannot continue a character that is halfway through the game which you created before installing the patches.

I believe if you are having trouble with the sound for the DOS version, you can get VDMSound and that should help. Have you tried that already?

I prefer not to use DosBox with QFG4, but I do use it for QFG1 (both versions), QFG2, and QFG3.
Yuri
Right. Well, somehow, the patch did work for the Windows version, too.

And , I installed both the DOS and Windows versions, both of which were patched.

a) I already restarted the game after installing the Redsun patch.

b) Yes, I used VDMSound too. No improvement, either.
Ghost_Rider
Sounds like you have tried pretty much everything then. Unfortunately, sometime the older games don't run all that well unless you have access to an older computer.

With Dosbox, the NRS patches, VDM Sound, etc, you should be able to get it to run very well though.

If you wouldn't mind posting the stats of your computer, there may be something that someone can suggest or see an issue with.

-Processor Speed
-Amount of RAM
-Video Card
-Sound Card
-Operating System with Service Pack info
-Version of QFG4 you have (just QFG4, or the QFG Anthology version, or QFG Collection Series version)

Hi all!

First post here; I am trying to run qfg4 with VDM sound, following the instructions posted by Charles earlier on this thread. However, when I run either the sierra file or the qg4cd file, after loading the vddloader.dll it either says "checking for shadow of darkness cd in drive D" when I run the qg4cd file (the CD is on drive D, by the way) and then becomes inactive, or it simply says loading vddloader.dll and then becomes inactive when I run the sierra file. Iīve even copied the sound file and altered the resource.cfg so it would not read from the cd, but that didnīt help either.

Iīve been able to play it in DOSBox, but I still want to play with the VDMsound... is there anything I can do?
Elsa Von Spielburg
Well for one thing I don't see why someone would like to play the windows version when they can play the Dos version with all the graphics and good sound...

But well if you want to run it - lets see.....

Have you tried running the game with 256 Color compatibility? Cause that's what the windows version needs...(another reason why the windows version sucks compaired to the Dos version) smile.gif
handir
It's the DOS version Iīve installed; is that the problem? Is the VDMsound no good for the DOS version of QFG4? Anyway, Iīm trying to play it with VDMsound because of the combat timer... I really miss getting all my stamina back in a sec. Itīs the best way to max your skills after all.

But if I canīt do it then Iīll play it with dosbox anyway. Unless there is a way to make dosbox get all stamina back up too, in which case I donīt need to bother with the VDMsound.
handir
By the way, I did try running it with 256-color compatibility, but with no success either... but I'd still like to enjoy the combat timer, so help me, please...

Hi Everyone, I am not actually new to the forum. I was briefly a member this summer when I lost track of you guys. The forum is great as always and the new looks is AWESOME.

I want to first thank Almirena for helping me when I purchased the QFG Anthology CD. It has been a while ago, so you probably don't remember, but thanks anyway.

I do have a technical problem. Hopefully, it will not be too difficult to solve. I have my games up and running before I read about dosbox and the patches on the threads. My problem is I am at the part where the hero in QFGIV needs to summon Erana's staff to break the crystal and I can't summon the staff. I tried to follow the solutions from the README File that came with the game. Of course, I am not sure that I made the boot disk, it suggested, correctly. Solution #3 in the README File suggests to turn off the turbo switch. I don't know how to tell if I have one and it is possible that I do since I am playing on an old lap top; which is probably why I have minimum problems loading and playing the games. Can anyone help me or am I going to have to load the patches or dosbox and start all over?

I can't recall laptops ever having a turbo button. I remember my 286, 386 and 486 desktops having one, but that's it. I seriously doubt your laptop is as old as a 486 anyway. Once the Pentium-class PCs rolled in, the turbo button went the way of the dinosaur.

If you're using a pre-Pentium-class chip in your laptop, then it's conceivable that it might have a turbo button (although once again, I don't remember laptops having turbo buttons, period), but otherwise, there's no turbo button.

You have to remember that the QfG games are old and when they were originally created (and thus the README files written), much older machines were in use. Back then, there was a turbo button. The one exception to this would probably be QfG5, which was (if I recall correctly) released in 1998.

As far as your problem goes, I can't really help. Unfortunately, the only suggestion I'd have is to try DOSBox. I assume that'd mean you'd need to start all over though and I can see how that'd be extremely frustrating.
Ghost_Rider
The very early Pentiums sometimes did come with a turbo button, but once the Pentiums with MMX started coming out (and later Pentium 2), I believe that was it for the turbo button.

On my old Pentium with the turbo button, with it turned off it ran at 100MHz, and with it turned on it ran at 166MHz. I don't think I ever had the turbo off other than when I first got it.
DeadPoolX
Really? Because I remember my Pentium 90 MHz and 133 MHz and they both lacked a turbo button. Obviously my Pentium II 266 MHz and Pentium III 667 MHz didn't have a turbo button either. Maybe the turbo button itself depended on the manufacturer.

Regardless, I believe it was a desktop phenomenon, and I can't remember any laptops ever having a turbo button.
Elsa Von Spielburg
Okay, let me make a few things clear smile.gif

First of all, DosBox is a Sound Blaster and Midi emulator - which means if you run a Dos game with DosBox it will use the Sound Blaster compatibility that most if not all computers of the Dos-early windows age had... Which means you don't need VDM in that case that would probably work less efficiently for that part.

Now when it comes to the 256 colors part - only the Windows version of Qfg 4 needs that! How do you figure if you re running windows or dos version.....?

Well the Windows version runs in a Window and not full screen...and it starts from windows and NOT dos...and you do not need VDM sound for it cause it's a Windows application. Plus you cannot start it with DosBox cause it's for the same reason and you will get an error saying it cannot be run under Dos mode or something like that...

....................................................................

Now as far as the Turbo part goes goes wink.gif Well I have a Pentium 1 - 133Mhz and it does not have such a thing smile.gif
Star Maiden
I know I looked every where on my system for a Turbo Switch and could not find one. I read the "Make A Boot Disk" thread. I am going to try to make another boot disk using those instructions. If that doesn't work, then I will load dosbox and start over, which I hate to do since I just got QFGV and I am dying to play.

Since I am having minimum problems running my games, would it be better to use the patches instead of dosbox?

Star Maiden merlin.gif
Darian Kheynes
The patches probably won't work before you restart your game. The old saves work through the unpatched version. So even if you patch your game they won't do you any good before starting over again. So I'd just bite the bullet and start all over again. At least you can get the points you missed your 1st time round, and max out your character's stats easier, since you allready know how to do it...
Star Maiden
Okay, I am trying to start over. I downloaded the patches and DOSbox, but I can't open DOSbox. The MS DOS window comes up with the DOSbox window and I get the following error message in the MS DOS window:

MIDI: Opened device: win32
Exit to error: SDL Can't set pallette

I have my system running at 256 colors to play QFG4. I don't know if this is what the pallette error is referring to. After the MS DOS window displays the above error message, both windows disappear. I obviously did something wrong when I installed DOSbox. Can anyone help me?

Star Maiden merlin.gif
Elsa Von Spielburg
Please read my post above....

The Dos version doesn't run on 256 colors! Only the Windows version does! Therefore before running DosBox you need to change your colors back to normal. smile.gif
Star Maiden
Elsa- I changed my colors, but I still can't get DOSbox to work. The error I get now is: Failed to create a rendering output.

The MSDOS window is still coming up with the DOSbox window for about 15 seconds then they both disappear from my computer screen. I have read all the threads. I had no problem installing my games and playing them (had a few bugs that I was able to get around); I just can't finish QFG4 without the DOSbox.

Besides, from all the threads I have read, it seems like I am missing out on some interesting graphics by playing QFG4 in windows.

Elsa Von Spielburg
Ummm.....ok I'm thinking of three possibilities here....

1. You have a corrupt Windows installation

2. You have a corrupt DosBox installation and/or settings that need to change

3. Your graphics card or its drivers are giving trouble to DosBox

If I were you, I would first try to change the compatibility mode to Win98...

If that doesn't work I would try to uninstall DosBox, delete all the remaining files if any in the DosBox installation folder - download the latest version and install that or reinstall the version I have...

And if that doesn't work try to uninstall your graphics card's drivers and download and install the latest drivers

And if that doesn't work - try to reinstall Windows - that way if there's any corruption in there it will be fixed.

And if that doesn't work I'll have to think of more ideas wink.gif

That's all I can think of for now - let me see if I can come up with something else - in the meantime it doesn't hurt to try the above options smile.gif
Elsa Von Spielburg
Well you might want to have a look here at the official DosBox site: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.p...temRequirements

Plus there's a link for specific resources that games might demand...

There might be a chance your graphics card may not be able to emulate the kind of graphics DosBox supports - which I hope is not the case smile.gif
Star Maiden
Great News!! I uninstalled DOSbox as you suggested and clicked on the link you left on your post. It appears my little Pentium II could not handle the 0.63 version of DOSbox. I downloaded 0.60 version and made some configurations. I am up and running with music, graphics, sound effects and all.

THANKS Elsa!

I'm running Windows XP and I'm trying to install all of the games on the anthology. When I first tried to install them I could install QFG4, but now all of the other ones won't work. The install opens, it appears to install but it does it virtually instantaneously and when I check, it didn't actually install at all. I also tried installing them using DOSBox but it does the same thing. I downloaded and installed LSL7 Setup and now its coming up with the error Cannot Find GDI.DLL when I try to run setup.EXE Before it was just coming up on the bottom start bar, but you couldn't do anything with it.

Any Suggestions?
Darian Kheynes
You could just try copying the files from the cd onto your hard-drive. I'm not much of an expert on the technical stuff, but that could work.
Almirena
If you're trying to play them in XP, it's a good idea, apparently, just to copy the games over to your hard disk drive rather than doing the install.

Anyway I want to install the QFG games on my Sister's computer for my nephew; it's running Vista Ultimate. The Dosbox instructions for XP work the same in Vista correct?
Collector
See my thread about my new installer in the QfG4 forum. I may do some for the other games.

All right Swordy Lady & Countess won't this method succeed for Dragon Fire and other older Windows Games? And, and and I am still not receiving emails of replies to my posts!!

Hi, I'm having trouble with sound in Quest for Glory 4. I've got the music, and the voice-overs and narration, but no sound effects. Well, in the menu when creating a character, I can hear the warrior grunt, and in the game I hear the Wizard's spells.

But I can't hear the howling wolves in the main menu, and I don't hear anything but music during fights.

I did everything described here, but I'm still having this problem.

I'm playing it with DosBox 0.72 by the way, with the D-Fend Reloaded 0.4.1 front end. All the settings are standard.

Any advice?
