OK, so I got sick of ME crashing more often than a blind fighter pilot and dropped W2k on my laptop. I'm sort-of used to NT stuff from work, and use XP on my main box at home., so I figured no big deal. Install went fine, it's a little slower booting, but much more stable and faster running.

But...

The USB port no longer works.

I did an upgrade from ME and everything seemed to work fine other than that. From what I can read, it should "just work". I'm trying to use a MS USB mouse on it, the nouse works fine on my XP box. I updated to SP4, and IE6, and all the remaining patches today.

I looked in the device manager, but cannot seem to find any mention of the USB hardware at all. On the XP DM, it shows as "USB serial bus controllers", whilst no sign on w2k. The laptop itself is a HP Omnibook 4150, with 64Mb of RAM (not that I can imagine that would matter). I don't want to nuke the whole thing and reinstall (but will if I have to - I forgot to make a hibernate partition anyway when I set it up initially. The HP site has nothing of use as far as drivers/updates, and google-ing/searching the MS KB results in nothing.

Any ideas?

I managed to find a knowledge base article ( # 242062 ) that dealt with General USB Troubleshooting in Win2k. The most likely thing I could see in there was an incorrectly configured root hub:

QUOTE
Incorrectly Configured Root Hub
As mentioned earlier in this article, USB controllers require that an IRQ be assigned. This is done in the system BIOS, and usually results in IRQ 9 being assigned.

Yeah, I found that, but it didn't help me. Thanks for trying though.

I think I might just dig out my W98 cd and put that on... :/

Yeah, sorry Noct. Can't say I've ever been a big fan of Win2k, so I've never gotten far enough to need to troubleshoot. *shrugs*
