I'd appreciate the help of each one of you in gathering together the various Easter eggs we find in this first game. Please specify exactly what - the reference - the circumstances, etc. so that we can create a terrific list.

The Hermit: the line "I'm Henry, Henry the eighth I am" is a joke about the song "I'm Henry the Eighth".

Erasmus: There are more Easter eggs here than you can count on two hands, so I'll do what I can to gather them.

The airplane is from Lytton police department (I think).

The suit of armor is the same armor from Laura Bow 1: The Colonel's Bequest.

The coffin in the EGA version has Rosetta on it. Also that coffin is the same on that you find in the Crypt in King's Quest 4.

In the VGA version, it mentions that's there a bow tied on it... in the Laura Bow style!

At the bottom of the mountain, there's the 'Great Wall of Spielburg' which a spoof of the great wall of China, he also makes comments about his travel agent!

And more, but's all I can remember for now.

The Gargoyle: Heck yeah! There's a lot, and they're the BEST in the game. Most of them are found in the VGA version.

The meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything, which in the game is 42, is taken from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy... Also when you say '42', the Gargoyle says "So you put some Deep Thought into it eh!", in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Deep Thought was the computer that figured out the answer 42!

When you say that your quest is to find the Holy Grail, the gargoyle will say "Sorry, but that Jones guy already found it" It is a reference to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in the movie, Indy goes looking for the Grail.

When you say your quest is to be a pirate, the gargoyle will say "then your in the wrong game then" this is a reference to the Monkey Island series. If you know it, you'll know what I'm talking about.

When your asked "what is the mean air speed of the unladen swallow", it's a question taken directly from Monty Python and the Holy Grail... in fact, Monty Python jokes are without a doubt the biggest part of the easter eggs in all the Sierra game series, darn, they must have been popular with everybody at Sierra!

When you tell them you see the wizard of Oz, the gargoyle will answer "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore", I don't have to explain what this is refering to do I?

Another Wizard of Oz reference, if you tell them your name is Oz, he'll answer "And who do you think I am? Dorothy?"

When you tell them your name is Graham Cracker, the gargoyle will answer "right and I'm princess Rubella". I should tell you people that King Graham got his name because Roberta Williams had a taste for Graham crackers!

When he asks you what's the thieves password, if you answer "swordfish" he says "and 'X' Marx the spot" for some odd reason, I think this is a refence to Christy Marx, but I could be mistaken.

That's all for now, more to come!

There's the submarine from Codname: Iceman.
Orion
There's Earl Sinclair from the Disney TV show Dinosaurs. And I'm starting to think that the Kobold is taken from Tolkein himself. AKA Gollum/Smeagol smile.gif
Briavel
Don't forget Nessie who appears randomly near 'Enry's.
Elsa Von Spielburg
Who? confused.gif
Arcc
The Loch Ness monster.
Orion
PL, it's Rosella, not Rosetta smile.gif

And it says that the Rosella Stone is on the coffin.

But the best In-Game Goddie of all - Amelia's Kiss! biggrin.gif
Paladinlover
My mistake Orion, thanks for the correction smile.gif

Of course... I should break out KQ4 again and actually try to finish it now...

And remember, when you find Pandora's box, DON'T open it!

BTW, I don't even know why Pandora's box is in the game anyway. You see, according to Greek Mythology, when Pandora opened the box, all the evils of the world were released, and that's why there is so much suffering... of course, the only 'good' thing in Pandora's box was the good spirit of 'hope', that gave a fighting chance.

So if Pandora's box is unopened, like in the game, there should be no evil!

I think they had a tolkien reference in the manual when describing goblins. Also, if you look at the dead goblins in the goblin training area, they have some good comments.
Spearflight
Don't forget the first bug in the game, on the loading screen. biggrin.gif
Arcc
One time that "first bug" caused my game to crash due to an animation bug. . . smash.gif

The computer must've been older than Ad Avis... biggrin.gif

Actually it was my Pentium II laptop. biggrin.gif

Funny though, I've never had a problem like that...

The trapped fox might be considered an Easter Egg... a bit like the lion with a thorn in its paw, from Greek legend. Well, sort-of...

The rhyme about Hut of Brown is taken straight out of Russian folk-tale, da? I seem to remember reading all those stories of Baba Yaga, who flew around on a spoon, and if I recall correctly, that was the translation of the rhyme for her hut...
Paladinlover
I don't think the fox was an Easter Egg, he was a 'hint' giver, since he tells you about the Dryad when you free him, not to mention giving some advice.

Orion
Not a spoon Rena, a Cauldron smile.gif And the used the pestal (I think I got that right.. Might be a Morter...) to steer around.

Funnily enough, most of the stories, or at least - the most famous one - revolves around Baba Yaga and a Hedgehog... (NOT a blue one <grin>)
Almirena
<hits self lightly> I just completely mixed up the traditional Baba Yaga and MY evil Russian character, Baibichia Vyedmina!

Now SHE, Baibichia, is the one who flies around on a spoon. How on earth could I forget that????

More than two hundred versts north-northwest of outer Mosovoka, in the midst of marshy land (now frozen over with snow), which produced little in the way of crops during the warm months, was an area which was permanently dank and fog-strangled; this was a terrible swamp known as Bestol’ by all the city dwellers. The peasants and minor nobility who lived closer to it knew it by another name: Fen of the Witch.

Names do not spring out of nowhere—not as a general rule. And in this case, there were terrible legends about the fen to support such a name. Most puzzling was the way in which the surrounding marshes would be frozen during the long winters, but the Bestol’ would remain boggy and was always shrouded by fogs. The legends included such creatures as the tree-man, who strangled lonely travellers to death, and Baibichia Vyedmina, the frightful witch who dwelled in the heart of the fog-ridden marsh with her house made of dead men’s eyes, and her macabre spade with which she dug up the graves of murderers and sinners, and her wooden spoon with which she removed their eyes. By such creatures were the fairy tales of children made horrible, and yet strangely fascinating.

There is 'a dinosaur going to his work' in the VGA version at the end of the road.
A rare one, though.
And, Almirena, 'Hut of Brown' is not a correct translation of the rhyme.
The real prophecy, um, rhyme, is:
'Hut, hut, turn your back to the forest and your face to me!'
And Baba Yaga wasn't that bad in the folk tales. She usually helped to the main characters of the stories.
Trust me, I'm Russian... wink.gif
Almirena
<grins> "Trust me, I'm Russian"...

I'll have to use that...

The Dinosaur is Earl Sinclar from the TV series 'Dinosaurs', it was really popular and I very often watched it, so I recognized him almost instantly when I first saw him. Also, if you see him during the day, you can come back at sunset and see him going back home!

Thanks for the infor on Baba Yaga, I never thought she might actually help people!

She DID help the Hero though... Albeit a bit reluctantly, but she helped him none-the-less...
Rognik
Let's see... What can I recall.

I do know that "Hut of Brown, Now Sit Down" is the most popular translation of Baba Yaga's rhyme. This isn't to say it's correct, but how English Writers make it to sound poetic.

'Swordfish' is the password from an old movie. Don't know which one, but I've heard this is an easter egg. Also in the VGA version, the only password used is a corruption of that phrase. thumbs.gif

Reading through your Easter Egg comments, "A Hero's Death" is the subtitle of Kaspar's book in the EGA version as well. You just have to 'ask about book'. On those same lines, I think that's the same with the 'Gone Fishing' signs. smile.gif

The password to get into the cave entrance is "Hiden Gosiek", or "Hide and Go Seek" as they observe in the VGA. You're telling Fred the Troll to go hide and you'll find him!

The meeps toss up a baby meep along with some apple cores while searching for the scroll after you ask for the hair. He's so cute as he's hopping towards the hole again! lol2.gif Hey, I can "eat meeps" here all I want and no server will stop me! smash.gif That's a nice touch, too. wink.gif

That's all I can think of off-hand. You've already
Ignus_Draconus
some of the dead golin lines were as follows:
"the only good goblin is a dead goblin"
"a good goblin"
"this poor slob was the big looser at last nights poker game, he didn't even have lunch money"

Go to the walkthrough which I wrote - it's in the main forum, under "Walkthroughs". This is the direct link - click here to take the magic portal straight to the relevant walkthrough.

It contains every single easter egg and joke and dialogue of the QfG1 VGA version, fighter version. Other walkthroughs are in the pipeline...

One of the funnies things I came across in the EGA version that has not been mentioned is dancing with the fairies. We all know that our Hero does a very beautiful dance. The fairies think its beautiful.

However, every once in a while the hero does some crazy dance (similar to when you step in the ring of mushrooms) and the fairies comment with something like: "Hee Hee! That's a dance?" Don't know if this should be called an easter egg, but I think it's funny as hell roflmao.gif

I don't know whenever this happens but I think it's completely random. Maybe it has something to do with a low intelligence score, that would make some sense smile.gif I'm now learning how to use SCIstudio so I think I could find out under exactly which conditions the hero does this, and maybe I will do this.

Then again, maybe I won't...
Brightshadow River
That particular dance has something to do with low dexterity, I think.

There's a lot of easter eggs in this game, though I fail to think of most of them off the top of my head. The gargoyle makes a lot of Monty Python and other interesting references, I know. There's a dolphin that appears in Mirror Lake, and I swear I saw Nessie one day. And other stuff, but of course I can't remember anything interesting.
Almirena
In the VGA version, the hero has three choices - yes, no, or maybe - when he's asked by the fairies "Can you dance?"

If he chooses "Maybe", he dances a long and elegant example of the art of terpsichore.

If he chooses "Yes", he performs a faster and more manic version.
Crowley
Swordfish: the classic reference is that it was the password to a speakeasy in the Marx Brothers movie Horse Feathers. Also, one of the possible Thieves' Guild passwords is 'Schwertfisch', which is German for swordfish.

Another Sierra reference in Erasmus' place: above the chair there is an instrument called OnKlunk (twisted from On-Line?), which was featured in Leisure Suit Larry 2.

Sometimes you can see eyes in the bushes two screens east of the town gate.
Orion
Those eyes are of the fox smile.gif

I was just reading through your walkthrough, 'rena, when something connected (ouch!). I realized the "marvellously realistic dragon carving on the wall in front of you: “Let’s see, was it the “dragon with the flagon”, or the “flagon with the dragon”?”" is referring to the fabulously funny 1956 movie starring Danny Kaye, called the Court Jester (also stars Basil Rathbone and Angela Lansbury). Danny Kaye's character has to remember a rhyme about the "flagon with the dragon" and keeps getting it confused. smile.gif
Almirena
It is indeed... and it's a great film, too. I videotaped it from the television about a year ago when I saw it was going to be shown, since I had wonderful memories of it.
Paladin Wizard
Usually I know the movies people talk about. But here is one where the name only seems vaguely familiar.
Rognik
I saw that movie in the past year on television. (The CBC often plays really old movies.) "The pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pestle. The flagon with the dragon has the brew that is true." Or something to that effect.

This is also in response to all QFG1 dance related posts:

I don't know if what 'Rena said here is technically right. If you choose yes, and your dexterity or vitality or whatever it is (as our favourite demoness said) is good enough, your hero dances finely and the Fairies are impressed and will speak with you.
If you choose yes and have insufficient dexterity/etc, your hero is unable to perform adequately and shows his poor dancing ability (and gets booed out of the mushroom stage).

If you choose no, regardless of stats, the Fairies will force you to dance magically and the Hero complies Techno-style (which is an easter egg in itself, as Mark Seibert ripped his own Police Quest 2 Intro theme off to create this musical piece), and then collapses and dies to a (typically) humourous punny death.

With Mirror Lake (Lake Spiegelsee) in EGA you can see Nessie or the sub from Codename:Iceman, and in the VGA version I think Nessie is still there, but also the 'dolphin' V referred to, which is actually everyone's favourite, 'Delphineus' from Eco Quest 1: The Search For Cetus.

Paladin Wizard
I'm still learning new stuff about these games. I didn't know about the dolphen. But then again I only played the EGA through a few times before I got tired of the bugs.
Spikey
I've actually got some printouts from this OLD QFG site which had pages of easter eggs for each game. Almost all.. not ones like marriage with Khaveen, though.
I'll post it here if I find the link again..

- Spike
Almirena
I have never seen the dolphin in the VGA version. I went back to that Spiegelsee hundreds of times... still no dolphin. My hero encountered the submarine and Nessie, but no dolphin.
Spikey
I've seen Delphineus there once before.. maybe you need a certain version.

He just pops up and looks at the camera.
