Just wondering if you all have played this, or heard anything about it, I played it for about 30 minutes to see what it was like, it's kinda cool, an add-on of QFG1 but the time is after QFG4, you may want to check it out if you haven't already.
hoopyfroodcat
I downloaded it out of curiousity and was not sure what to think...on one hand, it was slightly humorous and an interesting challenge adventure-wise. On the other...it was pretty offensive, both in content and in the ways it used certain characters from the games. And I never could beat it, which also kind of made me upset. However, I liked the main idea behind it, which was the Hero revisiting Spielburg and seeing how it had changed.

Alrighty - here's a warning from me - don't read this if you don't like 'reality' and harsh words... then again - if you've downloaded the game AND LIKED IT - this won't even phase you...

-------

The game is a piece of excretory substance... It took and bastardized the Quest for Glory name, made the Hero a perverted psychopath, ripped off Sierra for all they're worth by stealing backgrounds from both QFG1 and KQ5 - and probably others...

I don't hold this game in high regard at all... The makers should be shot *looks for PL* It's an insult to all the fans of QFG. This game can't even be considered a 'fangame' - since the people who made it evidently aren't fans of the game, or else they wouldn't have butchered the game like they did! I'm ashamed that I even downloaded it myself

For the most part I agree with Orion about this game. But, it does have its charming moments. Like the cavemen, and the blow up bear for example. *chuckle* Rather interesting that. smile.gif
Azrael
Oh man... played it last night (about 5 hours as a fighter) and well.... it was pretty abrasive and offensive to say the least. It tries to be funny, but goes about it in rather sick and derogatory means.

It's true what they say: you get what you pay for!

Aside from the content, gameplay wise it was rather... hackneyed and poorly executed. Spelling errors, spacing problems, random crashes, huge slowdowns (for me at least when certain songs were playing) and load time, and a nearly non-existent combat engine.

As stated earlier, this is basically QFG1 VGA with it's map, and scenes cut&pasted from either other rooms in QFG1R, KQ5, QFG4, and elements from QFG3.

I think it had potential, because of the idea of going back to Spielberg... but the way it was executed fell short to my eyes.

Archon-TiMe
Well it was made by a fan, and you just can't expect much from that. These guys aren't professional programmer's or makign money for this, they're just making it for fun. So crashes, bugs, and whatnot are to be expected.
Orion
I don't call the creators 'fans'...

They give QFG a bad name...

Now a QFG "lemon" would be different... By ways of not ripping apart a game, pissing on it, reassembling it and putting it up for download...

Orion, I actually LIKED QFG 4.5! I don't believe that the creator did any true bastardization, even Ken Williams praised it. Now I'm not saying that the game is anything refined (given the fact that it was made by a self-proclaimed Redneck) but it was rather amusing to play and did have some interesting twists. Although I do believe he should have laid off the swearing just a tiny bit... and the fact that he claimed that by clicking the hand icon on your hero, you were trying to masterbate!

The combat system may be crude, and many facts about Spielburg were ommited (such as the Night Gaunts. Where DID they go?) and I believe that the whorehouse was a trifle too much, I'm not saying that I didn't like it (hey, I WANT the hero to have sex for once!) but showing a bunch of porn pictures and that's supposed to be funny just isn't. And even the Redneck camp didn't make sense, just how did those people get there anyway? And how did the Dryad turn into a foul-mouthed tree woman who wants to kill all Hippies. And there comes Bonehead, what happens to him in QFG 4.5 is totally inconsistant with QFG 4. In Mordavia he says that Baba Yaga came back for him and the other skulls before leaving for good, but in QFG 4.5, he's still there and becomes the evil spell caster guy's familiar. The 'date' with Heidi? Don't get me started on that, I've never seen anything dumber!

One of the things that I did like about it was the Mafia group in the inn (I was laughing my Equus asinus off when I first saw them) and the story behind the vampire, and even Karl's book collection. But those are only the few things that I liked, the only other thing about it is the fact that I admired the way the creator expressed himself so boldly and without concern as to what other people have to say. That is an attitude that is lacking in most people, but sadly, would result in a total failure in a game if it were made professional (not to mention more lawsuits then you can shake a stick at).

That's my opionon.

I haven't dowloaded it but I've seen screenshots of it and it totally sucks - I'm with Orion on this one angryfire.gif
Rath Darkblade
I was curious, so I downloaded this game and tried it out for about 5 minutes.

Orion is dead right. This game is full of spelling mistakes, grammar errors, low-brow bodily-functions "humour", full frontal nudity, sexual "humour", that excuse for a plot, characters and graphics shamelessly "borrowed" from other Sierra games and plonked in this game (like a merchant outside the Spielburg gates who looks suspiciously like a character from "Conquests of the Longbow")... and the less said about that Hilde scene, the better.

This game has none of the wit, punning, or charm of the Quest for Glory series. Heck, the only things that it has in common with QfG1 is the Spielburg backdrop, the hero, and SOME of the characters. Everything else has changed for the MUCH MUCH worse.

To be brutally honest, this game blows chunks. The fact that it was even got made shows that the person who made it is definitely no QfG fan, but merely treated the Spielburg backdrop as an excuse for as many sex and bodily-functions jokes as can be heard in any pub on a Friday night. angryfire.gif

To sum up, if you think impolite emissions of wind are funny, you'll like this game. Anyone else - steer WELL clear of it. It sucks ROYALLY. angryfire.gif
Paladin Wizard
I'm a little curious, just how bad was this date with Hilde? privateeyes.gif
Rath Darkblade
Trust me - you do NOT want to know. Suffice to say that it was in extremely bad taste.

It would only be funny to people who think that bestiality is funny. If you do not, then you will be as appalled and disgusted as I was.

You didn't mean that seriously, did you PL? "Ken Williams' " comment was something like "This game is better than anything Sierra would have produced during its heyday. If Sierra would have made games like this one, we wouldn't have gone out of business." It's quite obviously a joke.

QUOTE

What basically happens is that you have dinner in Heinrich's garden and afterwards, you have sex. Not a lot of animations here, the hero simply walks behind Hilde, drops his pants and "humps" her. The only thing that's animated is the hero's lower region. Poorly animated or not, lots of people probably find it grotesque.

All in all, quite a coarse game, although I must resent the statement that the creator is not a QFG-fan. (he IS a fan of the first four games; the fifth one gets bashed during the ending) Even without original backgrounds, sprites and dialogue pics, a game must have taken one hell of a lot of time to create (and with an old DOS-based version of AGS, that is) and someone who simply wanted to bash it would have posted some offensive message on some forum and get on with his life. Only a fan would put so much of his time in it. The whole thing always reminds me of the never-released Royal Quest.

Interesting fact is that I believe they received (and ignored) a c&d from Sierra/VU after its release. The only Sierra-based fan-game to have that "honor". If Siera would decide to declare open season on fan-games, this game would probably be the first one to have an actual lawsuit, rather than a c&d served to it.

Paladin Wizard
Thanks, I now know not to waste my time downloading this.

My reaction to it was in the line of, 'wtf is this!! This CAN'T be happening!!!!!'

And that should tell you grand what I thought of the whole scene. The only part which I really like were the Gangsters. That part made me laugh my socks off.

Orion
Hey there Erpy...

As my point was before... If the guy was a true fan of QFG, he wouldn't have F*cked with the game in the first place.

And you mentioned Royal Quest...

... Need I bring up the reasons WHY RQ was canceled...

--- Because it was getting too much like that piece of crap game.

Yes, I admit the game took a hell of a lot of time to edit/make, and I hand the creator many kudos for actually surviving through all his own stupid humour.

I believe whoever made that comment was referring to the maker of QFG 4.5
LaughingMan008
I LOVE this game. Its funny, fun, and free. You can't go wrong with that.
Yes, it IS funny. But what's even funnier is how bent out of shape I saw some people getting over it.
Saying the game pisses on the memory of, and demeans QfG is ridiculous, and proves you take things too seriously. Its called PARODY. And it was very well done. And the notion that making that game makers the creator something less of a fan, or me enjoying it makes me less of a fan, is absurd. Quest for Glory is without a doubt my fave game series ever, and it has a beauty to it that is something I've yet to see in a modern game. Every time the Heroes March plays during the Dragon Fire credits, the realization that its all over hits and I get misty eyed. Know other game I've played has given me a moment like that. But I can laugh about my fave things too! And this game was just damn funny, and a very enjoyable romp all around. I do realize I might be younger than you guys who say you hate it. I hear the average adventure game fan is in their mid to late 40's. Well I'm 26, so I'm sure that's a factor. The younger and less uptight you are, the more fun you'll find the game. It's not for the Leno crowd, its not really even for the Conan crowd....

...Ide say its for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force crowd.
Orion
See, I'm 25, and I have a completely different opinion of the game than you have. Then again, QFG was the first game I ever remember playing (before even Mario and the classic console games). As I've said earlier though in other discussions, if the maker(s) of this game was a true fan, he (or she, or they) should have made it a less vulgar return to Spielburg instead of the game that was created instead. As the game stands, it's a very harsh contradiction to the spirit of QFG. Playing the game in it's own right is fine, but I had a friend who once found QFG 4.5 and played it and told me about it and asked if I played the others - thinking the rest of the official series was as, for lack of a better word, juvenile as 4.5 was. He was shocked, to say the least, but he loved the games - and even still enjoys 4.5 because of it introducing him to the series (as misleading as it was). The game's just not for me.

And yes, I have played through the game, unfortunately. In my opinion, the only interesting thing they did in the whole thing was actually make use of that old log. tongue.gif
LaughingMan008
Ahh. Understandable. I can totally see your point in that regard.
Yes, its a harsh contradiction to the established world. But that's why I liked it. As I said, I like parody. I've always enjoyed it when something serious or semi serious is taken and totally decimated. That doesn't mean I don't like the original property. In fact, its usually because I like that property a whole lot. Devon and Elsa deserve it be skewered and humiliated (all in fun) just like their modern day colleagues. What current main stream video game char doesn't have to take a reaming every once and a while? Some more than others. (Oh Sonic)
I just totally reject your proclaiming diff levels of fandom. Calling the makers "not real fans"
They're people with opinions and tastes different from yours, who wanted to do something different. That doesn't mean they like the source material better or less than you. Hey, if you wanted to stretch a point, you could say they're BIGGER fans than either of us, because they actually put together, and released, a full working game. That's pretty impressive, no matter what your opinion of the game is. As Gabe Newell recently said at E3:
"Making games is hard"

Ide love to play another game like it. Poor Royal Quest...
That would have been great. XD

Oh, and that log thing made me LOL. I can't tell you how much time I spent, as a kid, years and years ago, trying to make that log do something.
DeadPoolX
I don't think anyone here objects to a parody of QFG or other Sierra games. Sometimes those games made fun of themselves and there was certainly some "good natured" ribbing among different games.

However, the problem most people have with QFG 4.5 is that the humor used was somewhat crude. Now don't get me wrong -- I like crude humor sometimes, but it doesn't seem to work too well with the QFG world. Like Orion said, the game is fine on its own, but as a QFG game (fan-made or not) the content almost seems insulting somehow.

I'm sure that wasn't the intent. Whoever made this parody was obviously a fan of the QFG series. If they weren't, QFG 4.5 wouldn't have been made, especially since it's from what's now considered an obscure game series from a near-dead genre.

Because humor can differ greatly among people, this game was sure to rub some fans the wrong way. QFG 4.5 made a negative impression on many here. I didn't find it very offensive, but then my sense of humor can be -- and often is -- quite sick, demented and insensitive. wink.gif
Matthias
Well, I tried to play it (not too long ago, sometime last year I think) to see what all the fuss was about, and the game was so buggy/glitchy that I couldn't stand to play it for more than 2 minutes. The hero sprite's movements seemed to move at a snail's pace and I think the game even randomly crashed on me, so I was done. I have no opinion on the content of the game though and I'm curious to see it, but I don't think I'll ever attempt to play it again.
Arlo
Well I haven't played this game, but I have to say, the discussion has made me curious. I'll have to try this out sometime.

I do have to say that the majority of comments from people who were offended by this game do sound like they were from people who were trying to view this as a serious fan-made sequel, as opposed to just a parody. You talk about how the hero has been made into a pervert, and there's no explanation for how Bonehead is back and all that. I am a hard-core QfG fan, and if I play this game and it turns out I do feel the same way as all of you do, I give you my word that I'll come back and post a formal apology here. But for right now, I have to say, most of you sound to me like Star Wars fans who are angry because they tried to view Spaceballs as a literal sequel to the originals.
Ajanhuiri
As I'm just getting back into these, I'm glad this throwback-throwup will wait for an insertion later (4.5) as opposed to now. I'm really enjoying the traditional themes. Perhaps parady (raunch or not) will be better appreciated later. For now, it is merely a passing curiosity.

Am quite surprised to see this thread here with all these new comments considering when I posted about a needing some assistance on a quest for a walkthrough I was making for QFG4.5 in this forum 4 or 5 months back it was instantly deleted, and when I asked why I was told I would be banned if I even mentioned the game again. Needless to say after such a 'warm welcome' I haven't returned until now to post on another QFG fan game matter and saw this thread lol.

Got help elsewhere fortunately and the game walkthrough was completed along with a map! I also put in tips for getting it working and avoiding bugs as well. If you guys are gonna play it feel free to let me know if the walkthrough works for ya and most importantly if you find anything I've missed!! smile.gif

I made fan page for the game and put my walkthrough & map there if your interested.

Really? Wow. I'm sorry to hear you've had a bad experience here. I haven't posted here much, but when I have, I've always had good experiences with both Elsa and Al. On one occasion, I posted a message politely saying I felt they were wrong about something. They politely responded saying they disagreed. I've honestly never gotten a dictatorish vibe from either of them. But I'm sorry to hear that was your experience.

Well maybe they were just having a bad day I dunno and I'm sure you get a lot of kids coming in here causing trouble but I certainly wasn't. My post was very polite and I was doing something to benefit the QFG fan game community so I was not expecting what happened. Especially as my first post was not a new topic, it was just a reply to an old old qfg4.5 thread like this one full of comments from even admins and the whole thing got wiped just cause of me bumping it with my question! It was only after that I posted a new topic which got deleted too and then finally 1 more politely asking what on earth I'd done wrong.. that was my welcome to QFMG lol (oh and just to cover my butt if an admin's reading I didn't bump this thread we're in now, it was already at the top so please don't ban me).

Anyway this was not what I came here for (I really don't wanna piss them off again!) I just posted in here cause I was stunned when I saw this active thread after what happened to me.

Hope the QFG4.5 walkthrough & map helps people! And I'd love feedback if people have troubles or discover stuff I've missed. I played through the QFGs waaay back in the 90's in my teens so its been fun getting back into it all again more then 12 years later in my 'old age' tongue.gif and it been good working with some of the AGS/QFG communities on documentation for the fan projects too. In the other thread I made yester (before I saw this lol) I'm currently collecting info on other fan projects to make a tribute section on my website for the QFG fans so that some of the great work and ideas over the years isn't lost forever when their sites go down. Their hard work deserves some recognition even if they never hit the finish line.
Orion
No worries Blake. smile.gif

After that post, there was a bit of drama over at the QFG Omnipedia wiki where somebody thought their opinion of how we handled QFG 4.5 was the truth, and when I edited it to reflect the truth, they started getting irritated and edited it back... an edit wars started, and somehow things got a bit out of hand (as things generally do on the internet these days).

To avoid confusion in the future, and since we've not had an 'official' rule about QFG 4.5 before then, we took up a new policy -> http://www.questformoreglory.com/forums/in...?showtopic=2864 ... basically, this thread is the only one where QFG 4.5 is allowed to be discussed.

Though I am sorry about your experience earlier here. We're really nice people, honest! wink.gif If memory serves me right though, I think there were a few other posts about 4.5 around that time too.

Anywho, if you've not done so already, you might wanna go to the Omnipedia and add a link to your walkthrough to the QFG 4.5 page there: http://questforglory.wikia.com/wiki/Quest_...Glory_Omnipedia

Oh, and welcome back! biggrin.gif
Blake00
Thanks Orion. That's explains that then!

And the 'lock and link to here' idea you posted in that announcement is definitely the best way to handle qfg4.5 threads instead of deletion.

Thanks but it seems I don't have to add the walkthrough as I noticed a few months back that someone else added it to the Omnipedia! Guess it's slowly spreading through the community without my help haha. lol I love it how Baggins has the Omnipedia pointing to the post of me getting burned by Elsa and then has a nice long discussion about it lmao! Trust me to end up in a wiki for all the wrong reasons lol! tongue.gif

Anyway it was fun making the walkthrough as I learned a lot about the game playing through it again and again for it. Eg normally in the past I'd just gone in as a fighter all guns blazing as usual. But in the end I had blast playing as a mage casting love spells on all the characters in the game, had me cracking up in a few scenes lol. Oh and I had no idea they'd made a new secret thieves guild in the game either, that was a fun discovery haha!

Wow, after reading that link I'm astounded. My experience here has always been that the people are really nice and genuinely fair-minded. If I had had the experience you had posting here, I wouldn't have come back here again. If I'd known about the experience you had, I wouldn't have come back here again. I have to say, I'm astounded that this policy exists. Somehow, this sounds to me like exactly the sort of thing the Hero of Spielburg would fight against.

I'm one of the most open minded, fair minded people out there. And I'm not judging this game without ever having played it. I actually (in my opinion) suffered through playing the game because I don't like to be one of those people who complain about something without knowing anything about it. While I admit there were a few cute parts of the game, the overall experience was far from outstanding.

Sorry you feel that way about how things were handled. It's why the 'policy' was put into effect, so things would be handled in a more... er... less insulting way than before, where threads were just deleted or edited and locked. The only reason this policy does exist is because the admins here feel like this fan game doesn't contribute to Gloriana and QFG in a way that befits the official games. I personally don't go out of my way to encourage people to play the game - I state my opinion and let them decide from there. If you want to play the game, by all means, go ahead and do so. You may actually enjoy it. I don't.

Then again, I'm sure if I wasn't raised with playing QFG, to where the game holds very fond memories for me (and to the point that the EGA Baba Yaga still gives me nightmares), I'd probably feel differently about the game. I guess you could say that QFG is something 'sacred' to me, and that something like QFG 4.5 just tramples all over it.

I nearly didn't.. was not too happy at all and never planned to return. But now a few months later I thought I should give this place one more try and see what happens and sure enough its gone fine so I'm glad I did!

BTW if anyone's interested, those who haven't played the game or don't wanna go through the nightmare of getting it working without knowing what they're trying out I've put up 2 videos on youtube and embeded them on my page. Unfortunately I don't have a mic or really have the time for a professional youtube playthrough which seems to be all the craze these days lol.

The first vid is the game's intro showing your return to Spielburg 10 years later. The second is a quick tour of the area, I kept it to 10mins so there's minimum NPC interaction and no quest work, just a quick run around showing some of the new areas & characters but not spoiling everything! smile.gif

Oh and I've already got some feedback about my walkthrough. Looks like you can rob the Jones's house at night lol how did I miss that!!

Also apparently there's some party of adventurers you can bump into in the forest who are looking for the treasure map (you get later from the book store) and if you're a mage they'll give you a free spell but the person didn't tell me where in the forest you can bump into them or what the spell is! Will update my walkthrough when I have more information.

Let me know if any of you have experienced this event.

Does anyone recognize the music & backgrounds in QFG4½?

Of course I recognize the obvious ones such as the cues from QFG1VGA and the backgrounds from KQ5 but I can't put my finger on the rest of them and I'd appreciate any kind of help I can get. You might as well write it all down since our personal views on what's obvious and what's not obvious might diverge.

For example.. Two tunes that are driving me crazy are the music that's played as you walk the snowy mountains (from KQ5) as well as the Stranger's tune which is first played during your first meeting with him in the guild.

For those of you who have not played it or do not remember much about it.. These are the only videos I could find on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kWilpw4KQI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1gAedOZ3iI
Blake00
And those would be my videos. wink.gif

I put them up because QFG 4 1/2 had no youtube presence which amazed me. I've had a total of around 3,600 combined hits with those videos in the last year and a half showing that there's still quite an interest in the title.

As for those songs, yes that’s an issue. Several members at AGD Interactive and Infamous adventures have a copy of the source code but not the source files (eg music), so currently no one I know of has the midi files.

However someone posted in a QFG4.5 thread here claiming they composed the songs in the game! They have not posted since however perhaps joining up at the forum and sending a private msg to him might bring him back to answer questions.

I've always found that mountain pass video very much reminds me of the Twin Peaks theme (an American murder mystery tv show in the 90s).

Stranger in the guild? Now you've got my attention as I'm currently working on version 1.1 of my walkthrough and don't like missing things! Do you just mean Sir Richard? If so that music I'm not sure about, almost sounds like a different interpretation of the QFG theme. Perhaps the guy I mention above made it himself as I don’t remember the tune in any QFG game.

Btw everyone my walkthrough updates are almost finished. Will post here when done (as I believe this is the 1 sanctioned/allowed QFG4.5 thread here! wink.gif ).
