ok so i feel like i've tried every solution off of these boards but here are my problems.

-first off here's what i'm running
-installed of of the collection series disk, windows version
-am running XP, with run max'd, 256, and have tried both 95 & 98 compatibility

-i have heard that the windows version is totally f'd but can't get the german/dos version to run at all, it crashes as soon as i open it

-can't get full screen

-i managed to get the text to slow down by turning off audio then running with the disk in

-dos box will not run it, i'm assuming since i'm playing with the windows version

-and as of yesterday i've begun receiving this message...

waveoutunprepareheader1

invalid parameter was passed to a system function

...followed by an immediate crash, this initially started when trying to leave dr. cranium's -- i tried to go back and restore from an earlier point, and that now happens whenever i try to leave any bldg

if any one can please think of something i haven't tried, please let me know this is the one game in the anth i've never played, and i've heard once you get the bugs out it's quite good (also i'm trying to play through with the same character.)

thank you ahead of time!
-mags

p.s. patches NRS patches have been installed as well, thanks again

Do not use the Windows version with XP. DOSBox is by far your best solution. It can be made full screen at anytime by pressing Alt+Enter. You will not have all compatibility problems, including the waveout error (Windows only) or any of the speed issues. Try my New Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness CD DOSBox Installer.

no dice... was actually coming to update my original post and say i'd tried that as well

whenever i click on the icon, the dos window will open and then immediately close

any other ideas?

... just checked same happens with the rest of the games now as well frown.gif
Collector
What version of the game do you have?
magdelena
i used your dosbox DL's for both, neither will load...

also i'm running it of of the anthology disk
Collector
Where did you install them?
magdelena
basic c drive... didn't mount it onto an imaginary drive, is that my problem?

if so, can you give me a kinda play by play on it, i can figure it out, but it's been a while... and never for anything this ill formatted to run on my system.

i'd like to be able to run it full screen, but at this point just being able to run it error free again would be a plus.

sorry again for wasting you time on it -- but i literally have tried everything i can possibly think of or have read about frown.gif

if you think there's no help to be had for my random/particular situation, just let me know, i'll skip SOD.

like i said, i was just trying to play all of them straight through with the same initial character, and QFG4 is the only one i've never played; which really does suck since i've owned it for over a decade
Collector
I mean what folder did you install the game? "C:\Sierra\QG4CD"?
magdelena
oh, yeah... bith versions are installed in the c:\sierra folder
Collector
Put the disc with QfG4 in your CD drive and then run the Quest for Glory Anthology for DOSBox installer.
magdelena
same... uninstalled the originals first, but dos box will open then immediately close

Go to the installed QfG folder and remove the exit line at the end of the dosbox.conf file. run the game and see what error you are getting.
Elsa Von Spielburg
Ok first of all, you need to run the Dos version of Qfg IV if we are going to solve this problem.

Unistall Dosbox and delete the installation folder.

Go here and download the latest Dosbox version and install it. http://www.dosbox.com/

Then go to the Start menu and go to the Dosbox folder. From there, open the Dosbox.cof file and go to the last line. Enter this lines below:

mount c c:\

mount d d:\ (replace d with the drive letter of your cd/dvd rom)

c:\

Open Windows Explorer (Start>Programs>Accessories>Windows Explorer) and go to your cd drive with the Qfg Anthology cd loaded in.

Run this program from there: QG4INST.EXE and install the game (Dos version).

Then go to the folder where QFG IV is installed and open this file with Notepad (try right-clicking and choosing open with and choose Notepad - or just open Notepad, choose to open All types of files and just open the file from there): RESOURCE.CFG. Look where it says: "resAUD=" and make sure the drive letter is the same with yours cd/dvd drive.

Run Dosbox, type: CD [space] [path to QFG IV folder] (or if it's standart type: cd sierra\qganth)

Run the game from there (type: QG4CD)

Let us know if this works smile.gif

PS: Make sure and download the latest DosBox version from the official site.

First of all, NEVER mount the root of your C: drive in DOSBox. The DOSBox devs are amendment about this. It places the boot sector of your system drive at risk. There is talk from time to time among the devs to lock down DOSBox to prevent mounting the root of C:.

Problems with running the DOS installer in Windows is that many commands used in old batch files will not work on XP/Vista and it will not work for X64 users. The best solution is to mount both a folder as a "C:" drive as well as the CD drive and then install the game in DOSBox. This will keep paths right in configuration files.

If you don't want to use one of the new installers, a step by step guide on setting up QfG4 in DOSBox can be found here:

Elsa... thank you ever so much for trying to help me, major problem and i think it may be w/ my disk in which case i have no idea what to do frown.gif... this is what i'm getting...

FATAL ERROR: can't find text entry for 'videoPrompt'
This can be caused by a missing INSTALL.TXT of INSTALL.HLP file.
Press Esc to abort...

what would you recommend?

P.S. i got bored while trying to fix this and was playing DF with a new char, and am having the problem with the minos' room freeze up, any more recommendations on that? i've read your topic on it an have tried all avail topics except the WIN98 emulator (or whatever it's called). thanks again ahead of time.

collector... also tried your mounting recommendations, no dice

Post the contents of your RESOURCE.CFG here.
Elsa Von Spielburg
I could be wrong but it sounds like you need to format your computer and install Windows again, Magdelena smile.gif

I really can't find any other explanation frown.gif
magdelena
woof... isn't there some magical place i can just download the missing files?
also, any more ideas on the minos' room problem?

also collector, where would i go about finding that RESOURCE.CFG file, there isn't one in the anth folder?

thank both of you for dealing with all this and trying to help me out smile.gif

The missing videoPrompt is from the game not finding the video driver entry in the RESOURCE.CFG. There should be a RESOURCE.CFG file in each game's folder (except for 5).
magdelena
it won't open... it's showing up as an outlook file
Elsa Von Spielburg
Open MS Word or Notepad (in the Accessories), go to the location where the Resource.cfg file is and open it from there. Make sure you have All files selected as the Type of files to open in order to make it show in your program.
magdelena
thanks guys, here it is...

videoDrv = VGA.DRV
soundDrv = GENMIDI.DRV 220
audioDrv = DACBLAST.DRV 220
joyDrv = NO
directory = .\
cmd = QG4CD
mouseDrv = STD
memoryDrv = ARM
minMemory = 1600k
brightness = 0
language = 1
minCPU = 386
CD = NO
resAUD = .\
resSFX = .\
patchDir = .\;.\patches
audiosize = 63k
Collector
Do you see VGA.DRV in the game's folder?
magdelena
nope... no file of that name
Collector
Your game is not installed, then. Put your CD in the drive and rerun the installer from my site.
Elsa Von Spielburg
Magdelena, have you tried installing the game with the instructions I have given you in page 1 of this topic?

If not, please try it as it always works for me and I'm sure it works for most people around here also smile.gif
Collector
Without mounting the root of the C: drive.
