This reminds me of the confused thoughts of the poor hero, who's got so much going on in his life that it's a wonder he hasn't been escorted to a madhouse.

Imagine even managing to fit in a proposal while the world is in danger of being completely destroyed! And having flowers handy to give to her (which you didn't mention, but is implied by the proposal)... Now THAT is forethought.

I especially liked the bit about the bird.
