Ah well! never chose the Thief so no comments, BUT oooh as a Magic User I'm having a tough time. Running for my life, getting no money except by sellin 'flowers' or cleaning miserable stables...not enough to buy a Mana Potion or even a Healing one!
But I intend to rough it out

. If Erana's Peace wasn't these I'd have died hungry or killed by a measily Goblin <oohooo>

Even if you're a mage you should not hesitate to get your hands dirty. So, get your fighting skills up, earn the cash to buy them mana potions and then just cast away.

Yeah, I do the same thing whenever I play a Magic User (or any class for that matter).

Yeah. Nobody says you shouldn't be able to fight decently if you're a thief or wizard. Sure, you won't be as proficient in combat as a warrior, but you should still be able to "hold your own." Especially the thief, considering that class can't rely on magic (unless, of course, someone chooses to take some magical abilities along with the thief as well).

What do you mean, Gran Dad? It wouldn't make much sense tactically not to be able to fight even if you do have magic at your hands. What makes a hero is the ability to use what ever you need to succeed, and actually it would be honorable to fight without magic tricks, than with them. Besides, the paladin 'cheats' also, with his paladin spells, so I don't see why the mage shouldn't wield a sword or dagger if need be.

I always thought the fighter\paladin class was a bit of a wuss considering he needs his shield with him at all times - until QfGV where he can go without it.
The thief is definitely the most daring combater since he goes up against an opponent with just his pig-sticker and relys on his agility alone.
Maybe I'm a bit of a wuss, though, since I usually prefer to sneak past nearly every fight - regardless of what class I'm playing as. Don't hold that against me.

Oops, sorry. Sometimes I forget there are other cultures here with certain slang words having more abrasive meaning to our own.

Eh, I'm sure it's the same meaning... not really sure - but it also depends on who the person is as to how they view the word.

Better safe than sorry

I definitely wasn't referring to the naughty one.

Three meanings, actually

I know you weren't referring to the naughty one, but some people take insult
(more than necessary, that is) to it being used in the way you did.

Darian I merely ojected to 'getting hands dirty' as in Thieves or cheating. But as for normal fighting that's part of the game. Unfortunately the Mage has the toughest time, especially in the initial stages! Tough time buying Spells, except those that you can get free one from the 'Ermit and the Meeps, Healing, Mana, Vigor Potions. It too me a long time to discover a Gold piece = 10 Silver

!

! I think the Fighter has an easier time

comparatively!

No worries, Grand Daddy. Just a slight case of miscommunication. It's pretty hard to stay clean when you fight for your or other people's lives. That was what I was getting at. There is no such thing as a fair fight, the survivors write the history books. Our hero, regardless of his class knows, that sometimes a little bad does a lotta good. But it all depends on what kinda bad you do. It's about perspective really. And now I'm ranting again. Must have something to do with a recent school shooting here in Finland, 1st of its kind in this country. Anywho, I'm getting way off topic now... Sorry.
A good strategy at 1st for a magic user is to soften the enemy with flame darts and then engage in battle. After a while you've got enough money to buy all the potions you need and then just cast away to get the spell points up. It takes a little while longer to max out the magic user, but that's only natural. When you've got enough potions it's just about a spell maxed out a day. Sometimes a little faster even. Just remember, you'll need vigor and healing potions also, cuz magic is tiresome.

Sorry to hear about the school shooting, Darian. There's been a lot of that here in the states over the past few years.

What? D*ck? As in being short for, Richard Grayson?
Nah, that wasn't it.
The word, "wuss", has been relpaced by another word I used instead.
Will the horror of these school massacres ever end? My condolences.

That's it Darian, I am learning that the hard way!
What's this about a 'school shooting'? Sorry about it! During my last visit there (Finland) I was invited at a few schools for short lectures. I found the students very friendly and communicative (some girls from Padasjoki (?) still corresspond with my daughter despite the difference in ages.

If you all remember I'd been cribbing about playing as a Mafic User as being the hardest? Well I was partly right, but it was rather premature

! The first few days were the most difficult compared to a Fighter, I think about ten days? Then as was able to collect some "wealth" and buy potions etc it bacame easier and now I can finish any time I want. Except that being somewhat of a glutton I am trying to max all my Skills especially Health, Stamina and Agility

!
By the has anone ever spent an unwanted NIGHT in th Castle Stable? I had to as I was caught there after earning 5 Silvers, of course as a Magic User I didn't have any climbing skill and the Levitate Spell is still a game away until Shapeir <heheh>, served me right for not looking at the time

! And a most uncomfortable night it was! If I tried to sleep anywhere in the Castle I was chased by the guards. Had to sleep with all the bugs on the hay in the Stable

!
PEACE!!!

Yeah I've gone to sleep in the castle stable a few times in the EGA version, but never the VGA remake. I think you can still leave the castle even without any climbing skill, but you just can't get back in. So if you have enough health and stamina left to make it to any of the "safe zones" in the forest, you can get a better rest there. Of course, the nearest safe zone is Henry's cave, which isn't any better than the stable.

O Arlo! I tried and tried but found no way out of the Castle...as a Fighter I used get out easily enough but impossible a Magic User! After being chased around by the Guards I was forced to spend a most uncomfortable night, worse than that at 'Enry's <hehehe>

Awww sorry to hear that, Grand Dad. I'll have to take a closer look at the castle at night next time I play the VGA remake. I'm pretty sure you can get out regardless of climbing skill in the EGA version.

In the original (EGA) version I always made certain I got back to Erana's Peace, was too scared to be left away from it. So never had to sleep in the Castle

! It was difficult for me only because it was the first I had to write (American spellings) all the commands :rol:)! But over all it was more challenging than the VGA version!!

I found it helped to start off buying Fetch, then using it to retrieve the healers ring, and use the reward to buy Open, then I'd go to Erana's Peace and retrieve the Calm spell, I'd also grab some flowers while I was there, next I'd head to the Meep's, to get Detect and the Green Fur, and go back to the Healers and sell the flowers, then I make my ways to the magic shop and buy Flame Dart, and then head to the Falls to get Trigger from Henry.
also when I train my spells I start with the lowest mana cost ones first, as leveling of spells is based on number of casts.
Oh and the best places I've found to train spells are...
Fetch: Outside the Healers Hut or by The Spore Spitting Plants.
Open: Outside the town gate.
Calm: After battle/slaying monsters.
Zap: During combat.
Flame Dart: During combat.
Dazzle: During combat
Trigger: Mage maze.
Detect: ???
Also money for Potions, Armour Etc... is easy enough, just gather a few hundred mushrooms and sell them to the healer...

I'm pretty sure the only reason you'd ever train Detect Magic is so that you can either be a complete completionist or so that you can train your Magic and Intelligence up.
I'm starting to feel nostalgia about the grinding XD

I'm Guilty on all counts, I'm afraid...
I always really enjoyed trying to max out the capabilities of my Characters, in the optimal amount of time,
and found it best to start training with the spells, that had the lowest Mana cost first, since I got more cast's out of them, it raised my magic and Intelligence faster or at least more efficiently...QUOTE (Zachski @ May 2 2012, 08:10 AM)

I second that
I get quite nostalgic about it myself... hmmmmmmmmm I think, I'd better set aside some time for another run through, it's been a while since I had a serious play.
