i keep on facing the "oops! you did something we didn't expect" bug while playing as paladin and at the early time of initiation contest. still it is not the thing i do, it's what yusufu does. the tragic error message appeared when he throws the spear the third time to get the ring hanged at the tree. is there any way to pass this position? i never get the error message when playing as the other class, just the paladin. and since i'm desperate ... really desperate ... i really hope someone in this community knows how to handle the situation.
best regards!

This is because the game was written for computers with a much slower speed... annoying, I know. Let's see if these suggestions can help you.
a) The first thing to try is to click onto Yesufu the VERY INSTANT he raises his arm in preparation to throw his spear. It might take a few attempts before you achieve this, but good results have been achieved by this method.
b) My own suggestion - download CPUKiller or Moslo, and use the programme to slow down your computer speed.
I hope either of these two suggestions will help you get past!

Also: Try to save a second before the bug appears, that should keep the program from crashing.

I have turbo. Dont worry, it works just as well as cpu killer and all the rest of those other things

Moslow is for use in DOS. But even it won't work if your computer is too fast. :/
Turbo and CPUkiller are for use in Windows. Either will work just fine.

I say try the save the game just before the error part

No need for cpu killers and stuff....
A big thanks to Ugarte from Sierra's boards for discovering this by the way

I might be experiencing a different type of initiation bug. Could anybody tell me if I'm suffering from a bug or if I simply failed to use one of the triggers?
I've tried everything, but the Laibon wont bring up the warrior initiation. I've beaten Uhura in both spear throwing and that platform wrestling, and have used dispel potion on the leopard woman. I've finished this game many times in the past, but I dont know what's going wrong. Please help!

I just played recently as a paladin. Try talking to everyone you can in the village (that means everyone that speaks English) about the bride price and the initiation. I believe either Yesefu or Uhura will tell you what to bring to the Laibon to start the initiation. I think I experienced this too. When I played, I was trying to start the initiation and the Laibon didn't have the dialogue option and wouldn't accept my bride price, so I left and came back and he was ready for me. It's just these triggered events that you notice when you haven't visited characters enough times (for example, in QG4, I had saved Anna on like day 3 and I finally go back to Olga's shop on Day 8 or something after burning down the monastery and she's still talking about Nikolai disappearing, LOL)

You will need to kill a dinosaur in the Savanna and take his horn to the Laibon in order to prove yourself worthy for initiation

Aye I even tried giving the Laibon the dinosaur horn, but I got a message, something to the effect of "now is not a good time for that"
I started from the beginning last night, and I'm almost at the point where I was before I started over. I think I missed the opportunity because I didn't talk about "drum again" with the Laibon, but I can't be sure. I'll update later.
EDIT: I think I simply used the dispel potion too quickly before giving myself the chance to talk to the Simbani people. Now I am on the right track, now all I have to do is get a running death dinosaur to spawn

-- Nope, still having trouble. I finished this game at least 10 times in the 1990's. D'oh. The laibon told me to bring a dinosaur horn, so I got one, came back and tried to give one to him. The game wouldn't let me. So for days in the game after that, I haven't even been able to go to see him again to try and give him the horn. This is the 2nd time, and I've never had this problem before back when I would finish this over and over. I'm taking a break from QFG for a little while.

I found that the save technique before the spear throw doesn't help on my system. I did download DOSBox and use it for the scene and it worked fine. Of course, exit and then play in regular DOS mode. Also, the 'Oops' bug occurs later on. I'm playing as a Paladin/Wizard

and found that when Johari teaches me the 'Lightning Ball' spell I get an error as we near the Leapordman Village. If I am not taught the spell the game runs fine.
Again, use DOSBox for this scene, it should clear that up.

Ya see. After certain things are complete new dialogues appear. Like there is a "default" conversation list and "event" conversation lists. But due to the game's programming you must see previous "event" conversation lists (that have been unlocked) before the one you are trying to see will come up. For the Laibon to say what you want him to say you may need to hear other conversations for it to appear.

It's only because of QFG's timer bugs that I'm not going to upgrade the CPU on my only computer at the moment.

I never had this problem ( the spear-ring incident) in all the, roughly, 20 times I have played - by the way I use Turbo - until the last time and for the life of me I just can't seem to get past it.
By the way Elsa the game's save automatically just before we reach the place...until your turn comes up the game IS not in your control.
Will try clicking on the man next time Al.
But I still feel I need the NewRisingSun patch (not the Sierra one) which got deleted. Who will help me get it?

Hey Grand Dad,
You can find the NewRisingSun patch for QFG3
here.
The patch definitely helps with QFG3, I had the same problem at the "ring in the tree/spear initiation" screen. The NRS patch fixed the problem. Those patches really helped with QFG1 too... and for QFG4, the patch is a must-have.

After downloading I discovered I have it, ans was using it. The problem was caused despite it. I'll try and save (if I can) just before it...it occurs at the end of the first race and after the 'boy' (forget his name) throws his spear and "Ooops etc".
I have just dl the latest patch from Sierra (Vivandi

).

Thanks all of you. The patches didn't help...tried restarting about four times. Out of desperation deleted the game and re-installed it minus the patches and lo and behold I am through and having won the initiation ritual and have married the delectable Johari. Have set her free and am leaving on my visit to the jungle and hopefully she'll take me to her village and the 'spear' if she likes my hug and long drawn-out kiss

I dunno, you could always try if they work for you. You could always re-install if it doesn't.

I actually just posted a comment in the QFG4 forum about some patches made for the floppy disk version of QFG4.
There were 3 patches for that game that I know of:
1) QFG4 Update to 1.1A version
2) QFG4 Import patch
3) QFG4 Katrina's Note patch
However, these will probably not do much for the timer errors that the NewRisingSun patches help with when using the CD version. Have you tried using Dosbox? Not sure how much that would help without having the NRS patches.

You do need a patch for the floppy version. Ask Elsa, she might help!

The patches should help with the QFG3 disk version - but not guaranteed to help with the disk version of QFG4. On the NewRisingSun website it notes this beside the QFG4 patches: "Quest for Glory 4 (CD version only)".

The patch works fine with me (QFG4-floppy version)...in fact it says that with it you can read and hear the dialogues between Kat & Ad, and Erasmus and Fenrus...and best of all in the swamp!
