has anybody gotten kings quest VI to work on windows xp? i tried the compatibility and 256 color mode but they dont work. when i try to turn on the game it goes to a black screen then returns to the desktop. are there any patches for this game?
DeadPoolX
Never attempted it.

Have you tried using DOSBox? That might work.
WiseMan
heheheh, kings quest VI is a windows game, but thanks for trying. wink.gif
DeadPoolX
The version of KQ6 I played was the original release, made for DOS in 1992. Sierra later rereleased KQ6 (along with the other KQ titles) as part of a "pack" and designed for Windows 95/98. Supposedly, Vivendi Universal is rereleasing the King's Quest series once again, this time specifically designed for Windows XP (I assume it'll still play on Windows 2000 and other Windows operating systems as well, but we'll have to see...)

At the time of KQ6's original release, the most probable Windows platform would've been 3.1 and that was never very good for gaming. It wasn't until Windows 95 was released that gaming on Windows really took off. smile.gif
WiseMan
holy $%^! that would be GREAT if vivendi rereleased the quest for glory and kings quest series for windows xp! biggrin.gif do u know when vivendi will be rereleasing the kings quest series?
DeadPoolX
Unfortunately, no one really knows. The release date on Amazon.com has been pushed back several times, and as of right now, I believe the release date specifies "March 20, 2006." But I wouldn't hold my breath.

There's also something else to consider: As of right now, Amazon.com is only selling these compilations (King's Quest, Space, Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry; no word yet on Quest for Glory) within the United States. So if you live anywhere else, you're SOL, according to all information so far. This may change once the compilations are finally released, however. No one knows for sure.
WiseMan
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh ok. so march 20th huh? that sounds GREAT! lets buy it right when it comes out smile.gif. when vivendi bought sierra does that mean sierra is dead or is it still alive with the same developers working there but they just teamed up with vivendi? by the way what does SOL stand for?
DeadPoolX
I'm sorry, I was incorrect on the tenative release date. It's March 30, 2006, not March 20, 2006. Ten days difference. tongue.gif

As far as I know, Sierra is effectively dead, except in name only.

SOL means "crap outta luck," only with a much harsher word for "crap." wink.gif
WiseMan
wow.gif sierra is dead...... DAMN! mad.gif. thats terrible.............
WiseMan
hey i found a solution to getting the windows version working, but im getting a really bad error message using VDMSound.

Aha! No XP for me, I have all the old Sierra games from the floppy days and am quite happy playing them again and again on MS-DOS. lol.gif
Except KQ 5 which is on a CD (RWANTH), but still have to use 256 wink.gif
WiseMan
ahhhh man, guess what??? vivendi just pushed the release date for the kings quest compilation to december 31 2006 instead of march 30 angryfire.gif

I certainly won't hold my breath. VUG keeps pushing the release date back.
Ghost_Rider
Yeah, doesn't inspire confidence... by June this year they will be pushing it out 'til Dec 2008. tongue.gif

That's the way it goes sometimes with software, but in this case, I wonder if they'll just ditch the idea. A 9 month push-out of the estimated release date is pretty discouraging. rolleyes.gif

LOL

maybe they delayed it because there going to remake the series for it to be bug free on windows xp
DeadPoolX
Maybe. Or maybe there's some sort of communication mishap between Vivendi Universal and Amazon.com, which--considering the number of push-backs--is a very likely possibility.
WiseMan
or maybe vivendi is too busy killing good companies like they did to sierra crying2.gif

Well, if that's the reasoning, I'm ok with it. I would rather wait and have a bug-free game then get it sooner and have all kinds of issues to try to work around.

Just think of QFG4 un-patched. If it wasn't for things like the NewRisingSun patches, DosBox, VDMSound... many of us would not be able to get through the game. It would have been much nicer to have QFG4 bug-free so we didn't need to have people create patches for it.
DeadPoolX
I've seen developers release patches before the game is officially released. It just seems to be a trend to release half-assed games.

LOL roflmao.gif ya they're idiots, instead of releasing a game that is full of bugs that are unsquashable, they should just release the game when it is FULLY complete. that way it would be definitly worth the wait if SOME companies did that. ( sierra for example ) nuke.gif

It was Ken and Roberta who sold Sierra (I could've said sold out...but then they had their reasons?) Vivandi merely bought it. Regrettably they did'nt or couldn't do justice to it like Atari and the other big orgs. crying2.gif

Ken has a fan-mail site why not visit it...it's very active! biggrin.gif
WiseMan
can u give me the link to ken's site?
Grand Dad
Far as I can remember it was www.kenwilliams fan-mail.com

or www.sierra_fanmail.com

You see it was so long ago that I logged in. It was in fav. list but this new computer hasn't got it.

I'll do a Google search and tell you...or you could do it yourself. Look for sierra on_line. beerchug.gif
WiseMan
ok i'll do that, thanks for the info wink.gif

Welcome, prosper and be happy, have a splediferous day! wink.gif

Wow, another uninspiring topic.

Aaanyways.

Lori Cole isn't to blame for QFG4 being buggy, it had one week for QA. The QFG2 remake has already had months of it.

Both wrong I'm afraid, KQ6 isn't a Windows game. Both the diskette and CD versions are both DOS games with alternate Windows versions. It's also worth pointing out that virtually every Sierra Windows version of a game is buggy beyond belief, or at least has enough undesirable side effects to make the DOS version superior.

If you install the DOS version, you don't even need DOSBOX (though you can use it). VDM Sound, and the Speedset addon (for music) will make it run perfectly, there's no timer bugs from what I remember.

Also, QFG4 is perfectly playable on XP these days, with minimum hassle.

Good to see you Spikey, after so long! Upto your old sarcastic self hehehe!
Spikey
Lol, awesome to see you too, Grand Dad. Where are you on the new Janitorial Times, eh? smile.gif

it's nice to be back. I like this place, mostly.

Sarcastic? Yeah, I guess. I don'tl ike people telling others stuff that's wrong, that's for sure.

I have Windows XP Pro, and have never had any problems running DOS programs using VDMSound. However, a friend of mine has Windows XP Home, and can't get run DOS programs without DOSBox. Is this an actual difference between the two versions of Windows XP, or more likely just a bug with his system?

As for Spikey's comments about Windows versions of Sierra games, I agree completely except in the case of King's Quest VI. It actually seems bug-free, and I prefer the dialogue boxes in the Windows version to the DOS version. This is obviously a personal choice, as it could be easily argued that the dialogue boxes in the DOS version are more consistent with the artistic style of the rest of the game.

Because of this (as well as the problems running the You Don't Know Jack series in XP), I have both Windows XP and Windows ME installed on my system.
Grand Dad
Good to see you too on QFMG Spikey...thought you may have abandoned us! bounce.gif

Grand Dad
Yes PW isn't good to see old friends again! biggrin.gif
And Spikey you might have noticed that I too have returned to the Janitorial Times?

TribeHasSpoken I too prefer the dialogue boxes thumbs.gif And I have learnt to my cost that it's safer to have both OS on your computer bounce.gif It's only in KQ V that I like the voice over biggrin.gif .
Kurdt
You see, I have a big problem with people telling people that the solution to their problem is to not run the windows version of the game. Like TribeHasSpoken, I much prefer the higher-res dialogue portraits of the Windows KQ6 and can't stand having the voices without them. That voice pack rules all and deserves a good-looking picture to accompany the people talking. If someone wants help with their specific version of KQ6, don't tell them, "run teh k3w|r \/3r$i0n, s+00pid." Help them with their problem.

As for the Windows ones being buggier, this is pretty true. However, I've never had any problems getting the Windows versions of most of these games to work when using the computers they were designed for (486's and Pentium 1's running Win95), so to say they're entirely worthless isn't true. They work if you play them where they're supposed to be played. The only problem is that those who have the ability to create emulators have been more than content with just doing DOS ones and not Win3.1 ones. This isn't bad or evil or anything as there really aren't that many advantages to having one and it would take a hell of a long time, but the fact still remains that none exist so there is no easy fix for KQ6. Since it's been years and I've yet to find a solution I can be satisfied with (though there are a few on this post I don't think I've seen before and will therefore try), I just set up my old 640x480 SVGA monitor and my P1 running Win95 and go to town there.
Grand Dad
The problem with my KQ VI is that the voice pack works only for the intro...thereafter I get the dialogue boxes only. And frankly I am very content with it D).
