Actually, I don't remember EVER beating Swordy Lordy in the VGA version of QfG1.
I've been replaying QfG1 Remake on my Pentium 3, and was using CPUKiller in an attempt to slow it down enough to enable me to beat the stuffing out of the weapons master. But... it's still not working. My character ends up dying of exhaustion.
1. This is not because he's not in perfect health. He is. Vigour and health are at peak levels.
2. Strength, weapons use, dodge, parry - everything is at peak levels - 100.
3. My character's not overloaded. Just in case, I dropped the armour as well.
I saved the character and tried playing it on my 486. STILL no luck! For every 1 swing or thrust my character's able to complete, Swordy Lord has 2.
So... is anyone able to play my character for me? Only if you're able to defeat the weapons master, of course... if you've done it before and are confident of doing it again without too much of a hassle... Let me know, and I'll send my saved game and the saved game index.
Hopefully

I did beat him once, and that was about 11 years ago, it was on my original 386 computer, with 1MB of RAM, I forgot the Mhz I had, but it wasn't too much. This was the only time I ever beat Swordy Lordy.
Here's my preferance of game version.
For the Thief, it's the VGA, since he can beat the Chief Thief with ease.
For the Fighter, it's the EGA, so he can have a chance at defeating Swordy.
For the Wizard, either one, it doesn't matter much.

I seem to remember beating him once too. It required some perfect timing and a hell of a lot of luck. As you can see each of his hits moves you back a lot, whereas yours do practically nothing to him. Even when you dodge and parry you still seem to get knocked back. So, here is the solution: Fight. Don't click rapidly since it won't do any better. Try to time your hits to move him back the most (I don't remember when the best times for these are). I can't remember is dodging/parrying was ever useful... if it is, use it! His hits do way too much to ignore. But the most important thing is: Hope he misses a lot.

I beat him once, by sheer dumb clicking. I wasn't using a computer that was that slow, but that was a while ago...
Parry seems to be the best bet if you do not want to be driven to far back when he attacks, otherwise I must say faith and prayer don't work, as a spokesman for the Athiests and Agnositcs who by some wierd chance have beaten swordy lordy, I have spoken!

I have already tried so much that my right arm grew numb with clicking the mouse button...
But I have such an obsessive personality that I'll probably try again.

Beating him would be very, very hard Almirena. Even with an older computer, I think we should just let this go.

That's the EGA version, it doesn't have the same timer problems. And yes, I too beat him with every class

No it doest matter.
There's a timer-related problem linked with Erasmus' labyrinth game too.

Unless you are playing as a Fighter I wouldn't even recommend wasting the money, time, or gaining stress when dealing with him.

Your character gets no points for beating the Weapons Master UNLESS you're a fighter.
There really isn't any point at all in a mage or a thief defeating the WM, especially since the timer difficulties make this so ludicrously hard.

Hi!
Here 's what I did to beat the Weapon Master in QFG1vga
1. Use DosBox to slow the game. Check other posts for details.
2. Heal-up fully before you fight him. Drop all items on the ground, inlcuding chainmail armor, money, everything. Just keep 10 silvers to pay the jerk (you don't want to give him a gold coin do you?).
3. Walk to the right side of the Weapon Master. Pay him.
4. The fight begins, but rather than using the mouse, use the keyboard. Just press and HOLD '9' on the keypad and you'll trust your sword endlessly.
5. If the Weapon Master don't push you back, you'll beat him. PICK-UP all your items after the fight.
I only lost 30 stamina points doing this! My stats were all 100 BTW.
Hope this help.
Nexgen
P.S.: I have to thank you guys, 'cause it's on this website that I learned of DosBox!

I was able to beat him before my stats were fully maxed and by fighting normally (parry/dodge and thrust combos) because DOSBox fixed the timer issues for me.

Ok, I'M REALLY sounding like a broken record here... BUT
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcad...s/Downloads.htmhas a patch for QFG1VGA SCI fixes, which solves the timing issue involved with the Weapon Master... and other timing issues...
QFG1VGA was in my Quest for XP Glory, easily the most well behaved of the series, the only two problems I had was the annoying, but equally unimportant Weapons Master, and ther fatally impossible to get around door in Yorick's Maze, which are both solved admirably by the patch...
Hey Paladin Wizard, you still thinking about hosting the patches?

A bit late reply but for further reference

.....
All you have to do to beat the weaponmaster with a fast computer is to temporarily drop your chainmailarmour (I suppose you shouldn´t be overloaded as well), if not he will move faster than you and it´s close to impossible to win. After that, just keep attacking him.

Jan 15 2007, 01:23 AM
No, that does not work. It certainly didn't work for me on my computer (which is NOT the latest model by any means!).
There are two ways to get through this problem, and in fact to make the problem disappear:
1. Play in DOSBox.
2. Use the NewRisingSun patch.
Ideally, do both. That is, use the NewRisingSun patch AND play in DOSBox. It completely does away with the timer bugs.

Hmm... when I think about it some more you are probably correct. I HAVE used a patch at some point, but DosBox shouldn´t be necesary (tried on 3 computers of very differnt age)

As I have said elsewhere it didn't work for me. I have the patch and played that part on DOSBox, very nearly came to defeating him but even 100 stamina pts lost ultimately. I have started a new game and will continue until I get those 8 missing points to the final score *hehe*

With the patch installed he goes from being about 10 times as fast to just a little bit quicker (at least for me). Then I just drop all my stuff and I get the edge. I don´t see why that wouldn´t be the case for the rest of you as well.

What exactly do you mean by dropping 'all my stuff'? Do you just drop everything in your inventory? I wonder how that helps unless you are carrying more than you can

!
Galahad
Jan 20 2007, 10:28 PM
You will still move slower if carrying a lot of weight even if you are not overloaded. It´s too hard to tell the breaking point exactly, but at a strength of 79 I was able to carry 79 pounds and was able to defeat the guy while carrying half of my maximum weight. 50 made me just a little bit too slow, so just drop your heavy things (like armour) and it should be a piece of cake.

You'll need to get your fighting stats up as high as possible, Grand Dad - only take on the Weapons Master when you are dashing, strong, fast and wonderful!

Jan 24 2007, 04:09 PM
But Al my dear I AM dashing and wonderful *blush*, and had raised my three vital stats to the max 100 (isn't that the max in QFG I?) - Strength, Stamina and Weapon! Nearly defeating him thrice but...

.
Have started once again and this time I AM determined to beat him at his own game

Peace!!!

I guess I haven't played the VGA version since I don't remember the part, but in the original you just needed to have good enough stats and full stamina, then just attack (press button down, hold) until you won. Maybe I should try to remake sometime soon again, since I apparently didn't play it as a fighter. I do remember playing it as a thief and mage, though...
Now, I just need to finish my time-freeze machine, so I'll have time to play computer games again, seems I've been keeping too busy for them for a while now.

It's not that I don't have enough time, it's just that I used it for different things nowadays.
