Reasons I think the EGA version is better than the VGA:
*Debug codes.
*No errors that I've encountered.
*For me, it has a better feel to it.
*It matches nicely with Trial by Fire.
*Elsa doesn't look like the swiss miss girl.
*Troll cave.
These are all I can think of at the moment.

I love the original... I also like the fact that one has to ask questions rather than select questions.
<laughs at the Swiss Miss comment> True...
Troll cave? I can't remember. I'll have to investigate!

Er... what's the Swiss Miss girl? <confused>
Two more reasons that the EGA version is better... whenever you pass by Heinrich the farmer, it DOESN'T look as if Picasso has suddenly come down with vertigo and splattered paint all over the screen.
Also, after this happens in the VGA version, the stats screen gets fouled up by random flecks of paint, and one has to save, quit, and re-load the game to get a clean stats screen... until you pass by Heinrich again.
Very tedious, it is...

In almost all Sierra games, the original one is better. The only exception is LSL, I really did like the remake better, largely because the phone calling is easier, and the fact that you can make $10,000 at the casino, rather than a pathatic little $255.

The only thing I like better about the VGA is Zara.
But I prefer the EGA than the VGA anyways

Why is Zara better in the VGA version?

The close up adds to her effect

And the fact of having the pop-up dialogue boxes, it seemed to increase her role in the game, since you could ask here everything possible without her leaving on you
Spearflight
Sep 2 2003, 08:33 PM
But her leaving in the middle of conversation... it adds quite the depth of realism to me.

EGA is better because you don't have to listen to Erasmus' incessant jokes, plus you can get past the ME maze.

But I still like the EGA version better, even though it was an early SCI EGA game by Sierra.
It's strange isn't it? That the SCI EGA was so short lived. It was only from 1988 to 1990 that they made games with that engine. While the AGI engine lasted from 1984 to 1988, and the SCI VGA (all versions) lasted from 1990 to 1995, or more.
Why is it that everyone always says that QFG was from 1989. It was released as 'hero quest' in 1988, byt we all know the story why it changed

Good to get dates right - Dervish
EGA - I love the original EGA game... I agree, Ori, Zara is a LOT better in the VGA version, but that is virtually the only improvement. I speak as one who is still trying to beat that beastly weapons master!
Oh, and getting through Yorick's maze is reasonably easy with CPUKiller. Thank goodness.
However, I'm glad there are 2 versions of the game. It makes me feel contented to know that QfG1 was sufficiently beloved to warrant a remake. And I'm enormously glad that fans are doing remakes and even fangames.
Paladinlover
Sep 3 2003, 02:20 PM
Almirena, just about all of Sierra's adventure games were remade

QFG isn't that different in terms of importance at that time.
It only makes me wish that the times hadn't changed.
BTW I've been playing Conquest of the Longbow quite a lot, I once thought there was very little easter eggs, and it turned out that the scene where Robin Hood goes to the Fair was just loaded with them!

Defeating the weapon master in the VGA version is the one thing that I have not yet done in that game. It annoys me to much to play it.
It's ironic that there is only one impovement in the game, Zara, while so many things were made worse.

I like the VGA version better.

Why?
1) The forests didn't look all the same. I could actually tell where I was all the time, AND they didn't drive me batty just by looking at them - EGA was too darned bright.
2) Easier fighting system. It took me forever to be able to beat anything with EGA.
3) I like my eye candy - Zara, Hilde, Erasmus, Wolfgang, pretty much all of the backgrounds - all were far better with the VGA. I like that. A lot.
4) I don't like the parser system. I am a grade A impatient person, and I really prefer my puzzles in areas other than figuring out the mindest of the people who made the game.
5) It wasn't as BRIGHT... I really, really do not like brightly-colored games - like looking at the sun for an hour straight, for me.
6) Better sound effects.

I like the original better, but I more often play the remake because I can get through it more quickly. When I play QfG nowadays I'm usually aiming to play a certain point in the series, however I can't seem to allow myself to start midseries, so I always play through all of them.

I preferred to play the remake cuz I didn't have to use a slowdown utility to actually play it. The original just BLAZED through me during the combat screens.
Gadzooks, even Goblins made me wet my pants cuz they would get 3 attacks to my mighty one!

I'm not to sure that was your computer, in the EGA version combat was just brutal. The only battle that was easier in EGA was the weapons master, in VGA he suddenly learnt how to fight at warp speed.

The EGA version rocks. I played the original version ("Hero's quest") for ages with all character types. I never got any other QFG games until I bought the anthology. I tried playing the remake but I never actually finished it. I don't know why.
Every time I replay the series I use the original version for part 1. I'm always struggling when I use the remake. I could't even retrieve my daggers after killing the ogre with about 10 daggers

With the keyboard I always have better means of expressing myself, instead ofhaving to find out "where to click to perform a specific action" like retrieving the daggers from the ogre, or making the thief sign in the alley.
Beating the weapons master was also a pain due to his high speed, although the rest of the remake, strangely enough, ran perfectly fine. The original always runs perfect.
Also I like the silly looks of the hero in the EGA version much better (like "escaping" from the healer after returning her ring

)

The original is definetely better, in my opinion. The game runs smoothly, the fighting is easy and quick. The transition from I to II is great. No bugs whatsoever in this game ( None that I've noticed anyway ). I can get by just fine w/o the better graphics.

the Vga is better in every way because ... it just is. i mean the people got voices, better looking, not asd bright, you can ask about all the stuff. i mean in Ega did u know about Perri's bald spot? now that was funny as
Paladin Wizard
Jun 29 2004, 04:21 AM
I don't believe that the VGA has voices.

As for the bald spot, I found that out in the EGA. But I was used to paser interfaces, so it wasn't a problem for me.
Orion
Jun 29 2004, 03:01 PM
Nope. No voices in VGA. Plus the fighting was a hell of a lot easier! I hated the fighting in 1VGA and 3... Totally 5UC|<3D! Of course... My favourite game's #2, so I'm kinda partial to that fight style there
Paladin Wizard
Jun 29 2004, 04:33 PM

The only fighting style I hated was WOW's. SOD's was interesting, while DF's was fun at times if you're quick enough to get the archers to shoot eash other instead of you.

I always focus on the puzzles and plot, and the fighting stuff is, to me, just something to get through in order to play the game. That's why I love the classic adventure and adventure/rpg games so much - they're exactly what I want in a game.
And that's why modern games like Max Payne just don't do it for me. There's plot (sort-of), but it's not interactive. Your actions don't push along the plot. All you do is sneak, climb, use infra-red or whatever, and bring down other characters.
I'm a die-hard adventurer. I really, literally, don't care about the quality of the graphics, if the game is good enough plot-wise and puzzle-wise. Of course I like nice graphics... but it comes way, way, way down in the scale for me.
In terms of getting the most out of a game, lingering over it, experimenting, really enjoying it, I don't think the EGA system can be beaten. Woo-hoo! All that fun working out what to ask! Okay, okay, it was agony sometimes... but fun too. It had challenge.
I like to feel I can ask anything - and get some wacky responses. I don't want to feel... hmm... herded. You know what I mean? With all of the questions up there on the screen for me to choose rather than to free-wheel and come up with questions myself?
The VGA version has its good points - I'm glad we've got both versions. I wouldn't give up either. They're mine. MINE! Mine, mine, mine! <clutches CDs to herself>
