I went to the oasis and the dervish told me how to find the beast. I followed his directions, but couldnt find anything. I decided to cheap a bit and teleport there, but as soon as I walked out of the screen, it says bad room, 630, I end up back at town. Has this happened to anyone else?
Almirena
No... I haven't... but I've not used the cheats.

If you're getting lost, use this map. It gives really specific information about getting from the Dervish to the Cage.

Have fun!
Paladinlover
Never happened to me, did you go one screen left of the griffins rock and then go down all the way?

Thepal
The dervish actually tells you about the beast before it is there. You have to wait until after the Earth Elemental has been defeated. Then follow the directions (one screen left of griffin then straight south is easiest).

No he doesn't, but you can ask him about it however. This is due to the fact that one can question all topics from anyone at any time, there are no chronological order for any question. But he will only mention the creature after you beat the Earth Elemental. The reason being is this, you can't get all the ingredients for the dispel potion before you defeat the elemental, you can get the feather, but you need the fruit, and you can't get that until you give Julanar the Earth elemental, which is a vital part of restoring her spirit.

Till next time stay cool cool.gif
Thepal
He does. The guard at the gate gives you a message from him early... or someone else does.
E.C.
I quite enjoyed the scenes with the beast -- as soon as I found out it existed. The first few times I played, I never realised that the Dervish was talking about Al Scurva and not the Emir ... Poor Al died on me, I suppose, of hunger and thirst.

But like I said, I enjoyed that part of the game. The part where the beast goes taut and quivering when you pull its hair is priceless! *eg* And of course who doesn't like getting bad-mouthed by someone you've just saved ...? Hmm, reminds me of the Baronet.
Orion
I believe It's Aziza that tells you to visit the Dervish...
Paladinlover
But he doesn't behave like the Baronet really. You see, he tells you that, 'I don't know who you are or why you saved me, but you are a fool if you expect to be rewarded for it' and then he tells you his name and why he was in the cage. He does give you some very important information really, and at the end, he thanks for the food and/or water you gave him.

Till next time stay cool cool.gif
Orion
Yeah... but he didn't do it in a very nice way... biggrin.gif
Paladinlover
And that's understandable too, he was trapped out in the desert for days, in a form of a beast by a wizard who wanted him to die, and that wizard would really be angry to find out that the person is still alive too. And there comes the fact that he was apparently scared of Iblis's return, and he wanted to get as far away from Shapier as possible. Yes he's rude, but given the circumstances, it's understandable.

Till next time stay cool cool.gif
Orion
If I was trapped in the desert like that, I'd be the most grateful person in the world to my rescuer...
Paladinlover
Yeah, I would too, but more than that, I would provide some information to my rescuer, and that's what he did.

And can you reply to my 'where do you eat your food' pool in this section? I'm sure we'll have lots of fun there too.

Till next time stay cool cool.gif
E.C.
Even the Baronet gave you something useful; he's your ticket into the Von Spielburg castle, and gives you a little background on his disappearance. That's useful for working out the storyline of QFG I ... Okay, maybe not useful as in XP, but interesting as in learning the story of the game.

I'm rather sorry we never learned more about Al Scurva. He could have been an intriguing recurring character, especially during shadows of darkness. Like Erasmus, he could have sent a signal through, dropped a couple of hints ... Lost opportunity, in my opinion. Plus, it would have been nice to be able to deal with a wizard closer to the hero's level. All other wizards are close to super-powers.
Paladinlover
But Al Scurva was not nearly as arrogent as the baronet, he was just really, really agitated. And yes, if the whole world was going to be in big danger, I know I would be.

Till next time stay cool cool.gif
Thepal
Er... I think you are all forgetting that Al Scurva was the Hero's enemy. Enemies generally aren't nice. But he was annoyed enough at Ad Avis to tell the hero (who is also Avis's enemy) a little.

He wasn't the Hero's enemy... heck, he doesn't even know your a hero, he says so when you first free him. I think he was just a man who took several wrong turns, and is not inheritly evil. He was Ad Avis's apprentice, he was probably a student who wanted to learn magic from Ad Avis, and not really be a big evil fellow.

Till next tmie stay cool C:ool:
Orion
C:ool:?

Anyways... Good thinking PL... That would make for a good fanfic! smile.gif *hint*hint*
Paladinlover
Dang, I did it again lol.gif

Anyway, go ahead and write a FanFic about it if you want to.

Actually, it's Keapon Laffin that tells you.
Orion
Hmm... Seems Danny-Boy here took a page out of the NecroPosticon, and resurrected this thread biggrin.gif
Grand Dad
Teleportal Spell...ah yes as Almi says I too never used cheats...I thought for a moment we were talking about Warcraft III?

Several people, starting with Abdulla, Omar the Sultan-Poet, Keapon and Aziza tell you about the Dervish, but it's the Guard at the gate who passes Dervish's message (via a Beduin) on to you on the 12th. day.

You can't see Al Scurva until the you've defeated the Earth Elemental.

Why compare the poor chap with the arrogant Barnard...he tell you only what he knows biggrin.gif and then probably he doesn't have the time before he's discovered by Ad Avis? . Imagine youself caged in the burning sand without water (and food). angryfire.gif
Darian Kheynes
I kinda thought that Al Scurva was similar to the thief in QfG3 (what's-his-face). Both are guys who have just done what they had to to survive, taking the easy way out. It's not so much that they fell from grace, more of just slowly slithering away from it.

I'm with E.C. that the character was left kinda shallow. Really, out of nowhere a caged beast appears, for no apparent reason. It would've been nice to get more depth to Al, but I kinda thought that part of the game didn't fit too well to the rest of the story, though Scurva gives good info.
Grand Dad
Aha!!! But Harami turns over a new leaf wink.gif when you tell him about honour etc (if you were a Paladin/Fighter and feed the poor starving soul) and comes to your help ultimately else you couldn't have defeated the evil Wizard-Demon!
Darian Kheynes
True, but dear old Al never had anyone teach him honor. Without the Hero Harami wouldn't have turned that new leaf. Scurva never had an influence like that. So, it goes to tell a lot about the influence our prince of Shapeir has on people.
Grand Dad
There's a lot of difference in the two of them...Al Scurva was a pupil (?) of Ad Avis, both basically evil and was punished, perhaps rightly, while Harami was or became a thief...(a Thief is permissible in QFG roflmao.gif ) and thus not to be equated with the seekers of 'darkness' devil3.gif
Darian Kheynes
Hmm... valid point. Ok, we don't really have the details of their past lives. Harami seems to have been a survivor, doing what he felt he must to get by. Not a bad guy really, more misguided. Don't know about Al Scurva. Kinda hard to believe that Ad Avis would take a pupil, he doesn't seem like a teacher or someone who would share his knowledge or anything else.

I dunno, Al doesn't really strike me as a seeker-of-darkness kinda character, more of a punk who knows magic. Someone to do Ad Avis's dirty work. A pawn. Who knows, if our hero had had more time with him maybe he would've also seen the light, to put it poetically. Probably not.

BTW does either Al Scurva or Harami appear in later games? (Still working on QfG4, don't have QfG5 yet, gonna buy it soon.)
Almirena
Yes, Al Scurva turns up as a tax agent intent upon prseenting the hero with a formidable suitcase full of tax papers and back taxes to pay. Thus, yes, he is proven to be unrelievably evil.

Harami ends up as a seller of cold meats in Marete. He calls his booth "Harami's Pastrami: Meats on Marete", and overcharges shockingly. For instance, one sword can buy you a ham sandwich at Harami's.

Actually... no. NEITHER of these guys appear again in the series... <grin>
Paladin Wizard
Very few characters reappear later on in the series.
Grand Dad
Actually only QFG I to III are directly connected, that is beside the Hero two other characters go on from I to II and two from II to III. Except for Ad Avis who reappears in IV. I can't say anything about V.

And Almirena those are fitting future careers for Al Scurva and Harami. lol2.gif Oh Oh you never game Al Scurve anything in the future...did Ad Avis catch up with him as a vampire...Necro something? I am so bad at remembering names! rolleyes.gif

'Were' punished, not was. Make sure you agree with whether the subject is singular or plural.
Paladin Wizard
You know, correcting someone's spelling & grammer can get just as annoying as reading bad spelling and gramming. bounce.gif
D-Boy the Fighter
You think my correcting grammar is bad? You should see Akril, the host of the site WSSQID (Who Says Space Quest Is Dead?). In one of her comics, she had to correct one character's grammar in half the panels!
Orion
D-boy, PLEASE quit correcting people. As mentioned before - it's the internet - people don't have to be bothered by the RL actualities of puctuation and grammar.

Acting like that can greatly discourage non-native-english speakers/typers from posting, if they're corrected every time they make a post. smile.gif
D-Boy the Fighter
Sorry, it's just sometimes, like Strong Bad, I can be a real stickler for grammar.

Here's a list of Strong Bad emails with at least a few grammar errors.
http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/Spelling
Orion
Personally, I don't care about Strong Bad (although the Trevor email link had me in fits of giggles biggrin.gif )... because not only can it be discouraging as I've mentioned, it's also annoying smile.gif
D-Boy the Fighter
Well, they sometimes need help in the syntax. But trust me, compared to some of the grammar errors on this forum... I've seen worse!

Case in point.
Orion
Can't personally view the link ATM... but consider this my final warning as a Moderator of this board smile.gif

Stop it, garsh-darnit!!! biggrin.gif
Almirena
D-Boy, a couple of little things...

"Al Scurva was a pupil (?) of Ad Avis, both basically evil and was punished..." may have been read by you incorrectly. Al Scurva is the subject, singular, and the "both" referred not to another person but to two qualities pertaining to Al Scurva. The poster could have worded the post with more clarity, but it's not our job to correct others. Besides, the meaning is still sufficiently clear, and as you point out, there is a GREAT DEAL MORE on the internet that is much, much, much, much worse.

I only mention this because it's an example of how even someone posting a correction might not get it right...

We draw the line at L33t-speak, but unless something is completely indecipherable, I'm not going to interfere with someone's post. I rarely even correct incorrectly-spelled subject headings. Well, hardly ever. Truly. My fingers may itch, but I restrain myself.

But keep these points in mind:

1. I am a professional writer. It is inconceivably irritating to me on a personal level to see the English language abused. However, I'm not employed here as the editor of people's posts, and I'm simply happy to see people enjoying themselves. If someone ASKS me specifically for grammar-related help or spelling assistance, I will gladly help them. Otherwise, I do not nip in with my red pencil.

2. If people in this forum would be offended at MY correcting their every little mistake, imagine what it's like if a fellow poster does this. That's why it is wise to back off a little and just grin and bear any little typos or mis-spellings. That is... unless someone's typo can be joked about without giving offence. I remember a monster that was created during an online chat I had with a friend... created simply and solely out of a typo (my fingers were typing too slowly for my brain and an error occurred...). The monster is the Horu. The Midnight Horu. Guess what the mis-spelt word should have been... <smile>

3. Quite often these mis-spellings or little grammatical errors are not the result of the poster not KNOWING he/she has posted it incorrectly... but it's the result of typing hastily and not proofing. To correct their spelling or phrasing is as much as to say, "I know better, so let me enlighten you, o poor unlearned one." That might not be what you or anyone else intends to imply, but that may be how it's perceived. Many of those who are members of this forum are very good writers of English - some of them even know how to spell "manoeuvre". <wicked grin> Do they ever make a mistake? We all do. That's human nature, and that's why professional writers have editors and need to proof their writing several times. But that sort of effort isn't called for online. This isn't a publication. It's a forum...

4. As has been pointed out, there are quite a few posters whose first language is not English. They're doing incredibly well to be able to express themselves in English at all. Candidly, I'd love to feel free to help anyone whose English is a bit rusty, but one has to wait until one is asked. If someone posts saying, "Sorry my english not so good. i be happy if you can be helping correct," then... hey... there are many willing hands here who will be glad to help.

In other words... relax. Don't worry. Enjoy the vividness of people's posts and imaginations.

5. Sometimes I have posted about particular ways of spelling words, or of using the incorrect word for a particular meaning. Those times are few and far between. If I can restrain myself (as both an admin and a writer who could weep for the horrid torment to which the language is subjected by some people who don't CARE about the beauty of the language and who do not know the difference between its and it's), then by glory, everyone else is also going to practise restraint.

6. Again, RELAX... the general standard here is not atrocious, and the inventiveness of the people who post is charming. The more you relax and simply enjoy what's here, the more friends you'll make and the more you can show, by example, the splendour and beauty of one of the most succulent and vivid languages in the world, a language in which both love and hate can be expressed with vigour or tenderness.
Jonesy T. Hero
very good points...hopefully it will end this on going, multi-thread arguement
Grand Dad
Thank you Almirena, I am greatly in your debt. Perhaps I ought to have put a comma, but then in this forum, or the others for that matter, if the members started minding their 'Ps & Qs' in their posts we'll never get anywhere. It's the spirit of friendliness, the informality, the comradeship that counts. We are all HEROS in our minds, without some charlatan deflating our egos.

This young chappie 'poked fun' at me...I didn't mind it and took it as a joke, and told him so, but then he became insufferable - all this just because I missed pressing the spacebar in "upto". That unfortunately led him to start correcting PW among others. I am sure you have viewed those posts?

It seems this forum has been invaded by a virus which may spread if not checked.
Orion
I know who I'm sending my next chapter of my FanFic to for proofreading... biggrin.gif ( wink.gif @ D-Boy)

And (egad! Starting a sentence with AND! AAAAHH!!), to echo everyone else, "thanks" for that post smile.gif

---

One thing I might mention, is that in the Great Alexandrian Library, grammar correction is a nice thing, but only for the stories. Poems and QfGlorifications have spelling errors on purpose smile.gif The FanFics themselves might need a bit of tinkering smile.gif Just make sure you ask the author first, if they haven't put a 'feedback please' message up wink.gif
Paladin Wizard
I always ask for feed back, most of the time I write something I'm sleep deprived or hopped up on Antihistamines or both. gmorning.gif Like no one couldn't tell. rolleyes.gif

Yep, if anyone is writing fics, just give them to me for proofreading! Thanks for the joke, Orion!

I mean, if it weren't for the "cease and desist" order, I could go on and on about grammar, but for those of you fellow English-speaking people (whether in the US or another country), assuming some are still in high school, what you need to work on is nothing that can't be fixed by chatting with your RL English teacher a bit.

For those of you who actually DO want to send fics to me for proofreading, I will allow some colliqual stuff like "kinda", "gotta", and so forth, since they've somewhat been accepted in mainstream.
Jades Ditoyr
(Quick! Offer me a penny for my thoughts! I only have one!)

*as soon as one comes in, puts in two cents*

"Kinda", "Gotta", "Ain't", and "Y'all" are words that should not occur within a story save as dialect. Even then, it depends on the era in which the story takes place - as well as the character. The prim and proper Yale graduate wouldn't say "Y'all" likewise the country bumpkin wouldn't use very many multisyllabic/syllabic intensive words.

____________________________________________________________________

Just to point out, all games are tied with the Erana thread.

I & V are tied through Sam the Banker Man (used to be Beggar Man), and the much beloved Elsa Von Speilburg and Toro.

II & IV The Chief Thief is Ugarte's uncle (I think...)

II & V are through the family of Katta. Whilst we never met them in Shapier, they know of us. The presence of our great friend Rakeesh, Ugarte, and Senor Ferarri tie it as well.

III & V are by Rakeesh.

IV & V Erana, Katrina, and the existance of the Science Acadamy.
Grand Dad
Yes sir, they are all connected one way or the other, but as I said earlier I, II and III are most directly connected and with all character types. wink.gif Where's Erana in 'Trial by Fire"?

D-Boy, this is not being vindictive, but just to point out that even the best can make mistakes lol.gif

"For those of you who actually DO want to send fics to me for proofreading, I will allow some colliqual stuff like "kinda", "gotta", and so forth, since they've somewhat been accepted in mainstream. most directly connected...others in the same manner".
Almirena
It happens. We all do this, even if we are experts in the field of language.

I'm frankly delighted with the general standard of language here. There are some forums on which the following is standard:

QUOTE
i think u are kewl hey its just all in good fun so chill right?

I... have a feeling... that... I couldn't resist saying, "Try using a grammar and spell check on your posts" in a private email to a poster who consistently posted in that fashion. <bites lip ruefully>
Paladin Wizard
I can't stand forums like that. angryfire.gif But it's pretty decent here. smile.gif
Grand Dad
Language and decency are quite different things my friend. You can use the most literary and very correct language and yet be very indecent and vice versa!

Computer, Internet and especially the posts in an a Forum have evolved their own brand of language, with utter disregard of grammar and spellings. One must accept it partly because it has established itself (language I mean) and become a form of slang (both written and spoken) and secondly so many of the members know English only as a foreign language and perhaps only the basics of it. Then again it's the fault of the keyboard and typing rapidly?!!!

You come across so much malapropism that even Sheridan would hide his face in shame for introducing it lol.gif .
Jades Ditoyr
Ask for Erana as your sponser in WIT. Its where you first learn that she isn't dead, but is missing and everyone fears the worst for her.

I'm a little slow typing, wasp stung my hand and its swollen but I don't let it affect my garmmre... er grammer.
