Hi all, long-time fan here, folks. Recently got QfG4 to run with Dosbox, been having a grand old time hearing Rhys-Davies again ("Dr Cranium has an ORDERLY personality, so he likes to arrange things in Tables..." [*lol*])-- I've even been playing through the old Kyrandia series from Westwood (finished Hand of Fate this afternoon [funny, it really only takes one afternoon to play through-- too short = (])...ANYhow! (sorry for rambling)-- here's my problem:

I am running WinXP (Pro, w/ SP 1) w/ 1 Gig+ worth of RAM and plenty of HD Space (100+), now, I've got nostalgia-fever again, and wanted to start up Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire.

The autorun works fine (hearing the dragon's affirmative roar made me happy) and after I hit "install", the Install Shield proggie (along with the splash screen of Maximus and an Invader w/ an Axe) pops up and blazes towads 100%. Then, nothing happens. I check (through Task Manager) and see that the program is apparently running, but (to quote Rhys-Davies again) 'NOTHING happens." Nothing starts up, and the installation program doesn't go any further than that...I've tried making both the autorun and the install shield proggies run in Win 95/98/Me compatibility mode, but it does not seem to make a difference. Now this is confusing- on a hunch, I decided to run the SETUP file for the QuickTime 3.0 installation- there is a similar delay, but it runs! However, no matter how long I wait for the game-installation process to resolve itself and show the Installation Screen, (and I gave it an hour's worth of waiting time for it to collect and present itself!) it does not appear.

So, does the collective experience of the Forum have any possible or proven work-arounds or solutions for me? Much thanks in advance!!!!

UPDATE: Well, on a hunch I tried launching the setup.exe file from within Windows Safe Mode. It worked! Now the game is installed fine, I am just trying to work out some issues with playing it. Thanks for all who perused this!! (not including meeself =P)

Things have gotten tantalizingly better, and then bitterly, bitterly disappointingly worse. I was able to successfully install QfGV:DF, and even start it (enter into conversation w/ Erasmus @ the beginning) without the unofficial Win2K patch. Well, I decided to go ahead and dig up the two official Sierra patches and apply them- and they have rendered my game unplayable!!!

That is, I can start the game and get as far as the character creation screen, but depressing any button (or hitting the "enter" key) causes a CTD- crash to the desktop. Make that a ICTDPBABS- an IMMEDIATE ctd preceded (briefly) by a black screen *sigh*. I am not sure what the patches did (the official 1.1/1.2 Sierra patches, mind you) to have done this.

One work around to uninstall the whole she-bang and then reinstall and play w. ver. 1.0, but I know that there are some game-halting bugs therein that I want to avoid if possible.

....by the way, it's 3:13 AM for me now. I think I'll (finally) go to bed. PLEASE HELP. Thanks in advance.

This is what I get for not being direct & more to the point (not your fault, though). Everything is fine with SHADOWS OF DARKNESS on my computer- Dosbox runs it perfectly, and the Fan-Fix patch for timing issues on the CD version takes care of the rest. However, this is _NOT_ the subject of my post.

SUBJECT:
I can't get QUEST FOR GLORY V: DRAGON FIRE to play on my computer after applying patch 1.2. I have WindowsXP, and the game is running is compatibility mode. Before I applied the patch, I could start the game (actual get PAST the character-creation screen). Now, after applying that patch, I can only go as far as the Character-Creation/Import screen. Clicking any button or hitting any key results in the program exiting to the desktop inexplicably. I hope this is clear enough.

I have looked abou the forums but haven't found anyone else with a problem similar to mine. Much thanks in advance to anyone who has gotten this far down the page- given yourself 10 puzzle points, and raise your Vitality and Endurance by 5 points.

UPDATE: I found some relevant posts:
QFG5 with WinXP<--THIS EXACTLY DESCRIBES MY PROBLEM.

UPDATE
*BOOM!* GOT IT!. Deleting the "QGM" folder within the "Data" folder of where I installed QG5 to got it to work. WOOT HOO! I hope it doesn't have any _side_-effects, though? After all, the 1.2 patch *did* add those for a reason....*shrugs*. WOOHOO!, time to Save Silmaria! [again]

Oops, sorry for some unknown reason I got the impression you were looking for help for Qfg4 LOL lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif

Anyway, if it fixes the problem, good...but notice that deleting that folder could as well result to the 1.2 patch not working! Which means any fixes you were to get from that patch will not occur.

Good Luck smile.gif

You were right- deleting the patch folder reversed the changes the patch file attempted to make. As well, I STILL cannot get past the character creation screen-- now, clicking the buttons and whatnot allows me to make changes to my character, and the game successfully starts (I see the status bar [with your hero's portrait and inventory, etc]) at the bottom, but the Main Adventuring Window is blank- completely BLACK. The game freezes =((

Any Help?

I should note, again, at this point, that the game will run fine apparently, as long as I do not apply any patches, but then I can not successfully import my character's .sav file from QfG4 =(((((

Help! thank you in advance, with all the appreciation I can muster as this (as dejectedly frustrated as I am..)

Tell you what, seeing that you are eager to play the game (I know I would be too!) I have a suggestion. Until we figure out what's wrong, why don't you just send me your saved character and tell me where to place the additional points etc...

And I will import your character from my computer, then I will send you the saved game with your Hero ready to play. What do you think?

You can email me your characters file if you want. Here's my email.

Darn the Sierrra Utilities. I uninstalled my QG5 installation (and as QG4CD is in SIERRA\QG4CD) it got rid of my Shadows of Darkness installation ALONG with my .sav file = (( That'll show me to keep the backup in the same directory = /

That's ok, gives me an excuse to play thru QfG4 again = P...only bright spot in this whole mess, m'afraid.

Actually, after uninstalling Dragon Fire, I went back & did a FULL install. This time, I still have to remove the QGM folder to get past the character creation screen, but now I *DO* show up in Erasmus' home. I suppose this means I'm stuck with the bugs galore and what not, but I'm willing to live with it, because I still have the ability to import my qfg4 .sav file.

But, on my behalf (& at your convenience, of course, Elsa) do some research for me about how to get the 1.2 patched version working WITH WinXP, pretty please? I'll give you some flowers = D

Personally I don't have a problem with any of the official patches. I use WinXP and they both work fine for me smile.gif So I really don't know why the don't work on your system smile.gif
