Hi, i followed all the instructions for DOS Box, the DOS install of the game, mount the drives and change the CPU cycles. But i still cant get the Narrators voice or any other voices, its just skips through the text screens real fast without playing the voice.
Can someone please tell me how to fix this, or how to get QG4CD working properly on Windows XP
Im running a Intel Centrino, 1.6Mhz, 1GB RAM

Make sure your CD is in the right drive. Did you set up the speech settings properly when you installed the game?

Yes, the CD is in the right drive. What sound specs should i set up. It is an old game trying get working with XP. I can get the voices if i run it from a Windows install, but then the CPU speed is too fast. If i run it using DosBox, i cant get the voices

Did you mount the CDROM drive properly? (mount X X:\ -t cdrom)
Setting it to sound blaster always worked for me.

How to install & run QFG4 in Windows XP:

This is for the Collection Series CD, but it should work for Anthology edition as well.

First go to My Computer, and open up your CD-ROM drive (usually D).
Double-click in INST.EXE. That will bring up the Installation program. Chose where you want it installed, and with what settings. Chose the Full install. This copies everything but the Speech file.

After it is installed, copy over INST.EXE to the game’s folder (typically C:\ QGANTH\QG4CD\), and rename it INSTALL.EXE. Also delete INSTALL.BAT from that folder. This step is neccessary if you ever want to change the audio settings.

(If you’re doing this from the stand-alone CD version, then you don’t need to do the step with copying over INST.EXE, in fact, there is no INST.EXE. In the stand-alone version it is correctly called INSTALL.EXE.)

There is one other optional step. If you have the space (600MB) and want to run the entire game from your harddrive, without inserting your disc ust to hear the voices, you can copy the speech file to your harddrive, too. Copy RESOURCE.AUD from D:\ (your cd-rom, at the base) to C:\ SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4CD (your QFG4 folder). Now open up RESOURCE.CFG in notepad.

There's a line that reads:
CODE
   resAUD=D:

Change it to read:
CODE
   resAUD=C:\ SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4CD

Set the compatibilty mode to 95/98 & 640x480.

Now, copy over all of NewRisingSun’s patches into your C:\ SIERRA\QGANTH\QG4CD folder, and run SIERRA.EXE with VDMS.

That should be all you need to do.

Strictly speaking, you don’t even need to touch the compatibility settings.
Since you’re installing the DOS version, these settings will have absolutely zero effect on the game. If it were the windows version, that’d be a different matter.

I realize you tried changing the CPU cycles, neilk but still I need to make this first recomendation smile.gif

Try running the game with slower CPU speed (reduce the cycles) - I remember making an image copy of my original cd on my computer and installing and running the game from there.

As a result - since the hard disk can read faster than the CD/DVD ROM - the game was reading the info it needed from the cd faster and it kept skipping the audio/voices lol.gif

So then what I did was to slow down the CPU cycles again and again up to a point where the game was running slow enough to read the audio and play the voices properly smile.gif

Also I did the same thing for some errors that I got (since the game was running faster it couldn't skip the errors that well) on some critical points. Reducing the CPU cycles was just the thing to do and the game ran smoothly thumbs.gif

So I suggest you try it and let us know if it works smile.gif
