A company called Greenprint has created a piece of software that makes it possible to save on the amount of wasted prints. What it does is
  • List those pages that the software finds wasteful (such as a single line of text on a whole page)
  • Gives the user the option of specifying whatever text or images (such as banner adds, to save on toner) should be printed
  • Can save the modified page as a PDF, so that it can be sent or printed on another computer

The software comes in 3 versions,
  1. A free non-commercial version
  2. Home-premium (commercial purposes ok) version
  3. Enterprise

So, if you print much, and don't like wrangling with print ranges each time you need to print something, then the free version seems like a worthwhile install.

You can find a tutorial for the software here.

Unfortunately, it does not come for either Linux or Mac.

"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty -- a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show. The true spirit of delight, the exaltation, the sense of being more than Man, which is the touchstone of the highest excellence, is to be found in mathematics as surely as poetry."
- Bertrand Russell "Study of Mathematics"
